I signed off a ship in Calais and decided to make my own way home, giving me an excuse to take a flight in one of the last hovercraft crossings of the English Channel. Well, one flight was enough for me. Talk about noise. I can see why they were discontinued. What's the story with this one, it looks a bit experimental ?

I believe it was the first successful hovercraft. A British invention.
I built that kit when it was new!

I think (correct me gladly if I'm wrong) it was something to do with Sir Christopher Cockerill. One of the test sites was Browndown barracks near Portsmouth - a former Royal Marines Barracks. I have a photo of an early, experimental Royal Navy hovercraft which I'll post as soon as I find it!

Interesting, but as they say 'Great oaks from little scorns grow!' Odd shaped creature isn't it!
