Applying Humbrol Model Filler

Hi all, I recently bought some Model Filler for the first time and I'm highly impressed with the way it works , but I was wondering if anyone knew how to apply it to the model without using too much or making a mess .

I usually put masking tape around any gaps I need to fill - not too close to the edges so the filler overlaps the gap slightly- then sand most of the filler away while the tape is still there. That stops the filler getting everywhere. It also cuts down on the amount of scratch marks from the coarse sander I start with, making it easier to clean up the sanding marks.

Some good advice there Blair , i use the Humbrol as well as squadron green putty. What ive found best for application is an old knife (X-acto craft knife ) with a curved ended blade in it . The method of application is a bit like buttering a slice of bread , as in the blade is held at an acute angle and it gives very good control over how much putty you put on and where it goes. I'll try and get a picture of it on later to show what I mean cheers tony

Although the video says to use Humbrol liquid poly cement to thin the putty, I've found cellulose thinners to work better.


Unlike the poly cement, cellulose keeps the easy-to-sand quality. Adding the cement just makes it tougher to get a nice feathered finish.

Yes patricks right , I too use cellulose thinners if i need to thin it a little , in fact I had an old tube that was nearly finished and had gone a bit hard so i cut it open, scraped it into an old empty Tamiya paint jar and added thinners until it was a very thin ,soft almost liquid putty. (similar to the Mr surfacer range) I use this when I only need a tiny smear , I always keep the lid on but i have to keep adding a few more drops of thinners now and again to keep it soft , cheers tony
