    Yin & Yang

    Today I made two discoveries.

One: My H&S Ultra airbrush is the worst airbrush I have ever owned. I didn't actually discover this today. In truth, I have always known it from day one. However, today, I have finally accepted that it is time we parted company.

Yesterday and today have been rare uninterrupted modelling days and today in particular, I have spent 75% of my time trying to get the airbrush to spray without spitting, splattering or just blocking up. This has involved various combinations of different paints, thinners and all permutations of said paints and thinners. All to no avail and the brush is stripped down and in the sonic cleaner (again) to try and find a way of getting paint and air through it. Sadly, I have to accept that my Tamiya SdKfz 251/1 now sports the worst paint job I have ever achieved.

This isn't something that has just happened, it has been like it from the start. I used to think it was me but now I know it's the airbrush.

    However, the second discovery,

Two: For my lunch today I wanted something different which lead me to discover (for myself at least) yet another food of the Gods, I have discovered, if not invented, the Cheesy Bean Toastie. For today at least, the finest comfort food there is.

You'd have only needed some Bacon in there and you'd have dealt with you "Five a Day"

had same issues a while back but got it sorted with advice from you guys on here , changed needle still had problems , changed nozzle tip job done its now like a brand new airbrush , if you still have issues after cleaning and you can get spares this might be an area to start from.

        Cheers

Worth a try I suppose Richy, it has always been a problem though but I suppose it could be a bad nozzle right from day one. Thanks for the advice.

Thinking about it I had issues with my old iwata revolution cr also , again similar problems like you have , a little beeswax on the nozzle cap and nozzle tip sorted this , not a permanent fix but it works , it could be something as simple as seals and its a cheap fix.

            just a thought

I thought H&S were top end airbrushes. I was thinking of buying an Evolution Plus but this is putting doubt in my mind especially at £170.

Alan, the Ultra is their budget offering, I think it was about £60. It uses, and is compatible with, quite a few components in the top end models. The savings are reduced engineering quality in the body, less travel to control the air which makes it less responsive and the worst nozzle cap ever made. Makes it difficult to clean the tip and you have to drain the paint to and remove it to clear any build up. I could get a 'pinch' tip for it which would cure that but I have lost confidence in this brush.

Having said that, it would probably be one of the upper end H&S that I get to replace it.

I had similar issues with my old Iwata. The nozzle in these is floating rather than screw in like the Iwata. In fact, I was quite happy with my Iwata until I stripped the nozzle threads.

Personally I'm very happy with my Ultra. The ease of cleaning & floating nozzle design scores top marks with me.

However, if acrylic paints were my go-to (especially Vallejo) then I can see the difficulties. Score another for lovely enamels?

That is nice to know. I wonder how others would rate their H&S and whether they have had any issues. Cheers

I am beginning to think the same Patrick. The best airbrushing I ever did was a 1/48 Russian modern Mig. I used Colourcoat enamels from White Ensign thinned with cellulose thinners and the finish was beautiful. But there is no way I could use them in the house even with the extractor as the smell would, shall we say, cause discussionsops:

You get what you pay for and I should have paid more. But, having said that, it could still be down to me. The Ultra gets good reviews.

Without wanting to open another can of nightcrawlers, having used all kinds of paints there's no doubt in my mind that enamels thinned with cellulose thinners will always provide the best finish.

But we need to fit our hobby in with our lives (and family!), so even I'm considering moving more to acrylics. Initially I'll use them for large area coverage & enamels for fine work.

I might also invest in this nozzle cap - it looks as though cleaning the nozzle mid-spray might be easier. I think it comes as standard with the H & S Solo
