The new stretchable Tamiya tape should make this easier although I've never tried it

I've used it and it's ok. A bit thick and the wider the tape the less easily it bends. Use a narrow strip along the curve and fill in with ordinary tape is the best method I've found.

That's kind of what I do Andy. But when I've rubbed it down well, I cut it in situ on the canopy. And sometimes slip and scratch the canopy.

Do you remove it once you have the impression and cut it on a cutting mat, then apply the cut piece to the cockpit?

I cut it in situ.

It does take a steady hand I'd agree, but then I always try to be careful with a super sharp knife in my hand :surprised:

Have you tried Bare Metal Foil?
I used it on this Spitfire canopy:

Just keep a real sharp blade in your knife and clean the adhesive off with IPA.

I also use metal foil...can't go wrong with it really.
