Dull coat

hi chaps I'm having a little problem with my plastic soldiers 1/35 , I pre shaded them with primer then started with the field gray tamiya acrylics but the shade has made the soldiers shiney and that's not my aim ( I tried Matt varnish but still they shiney ) what's the best dull cost to get

2. did you primed the whole figure and the the preshading?


3. i use vallejo matt wenn the figurine is completely done to turn it all matt.


if I may i prime with black, then i drybrush with white and thats my shadow and highlight

Brush them in Matt for some reason airbrush makes it look like it's got a shine to it I don't know why

Robert as Richi recommends definitely Vallejo Matt Varnish acrylic not polyurethane.


Vallejo paint is matt but put on Vallejo Matt Varnish and it is as dull as you can get. It is even duller than Jeremy Paxman.

My thoughts on that Allan is that the plastic is not prepared and is still shiny and what ever paint you put on the base colour shines through mainly as the paint film is thin on the shiny surface..


Mad but put your figures in a container with bird grit. Shake it for about two minutes. Wash and then prime. That works for me. The plastic loses it's dull finish.


Just done exactly that and the grey plastic is dull ready for primer. Got one of the dentists cheap Chinese vibrators ( for dentistry ) velcro on the vibrator and the container base.. Fill with bird grit plastic pieces in top on (with clips ). Vibrator on for 3 to 4 minutes. The plastic pieces wizz around and around. Plastic dull as Ed Balls Also flat lining

Humbrol make a matting agent for use with enamel paints. Why not contact them and see if it can be used with acrylics?

Hi Laurie I primed using Vallejo primer ( white and then used tamiya feldgrau on the trousers/ and noticed it left them shiney. I don't have black primer I'm Vallejo or feldgrau so think it maybe what was said earlier the airbrush has left the acrylic paint shiney I started painting the faces with model air painted with brush and this is fine ( no shine. Think Alan might have the result with the plastic not curing proper ( 1 set German soldiers from ICM and the other from Masterbox both sets of 4 soldiers ? I'll get a couple of pics on here do you can see ( think its mixture of paints that have given off two different effects, I have the Vallejo thinners now and may clean up and await a new Vallejo black primer and stick to one company ( so off to raid the piggy bank and order some more Vallejo paints

As you can see from the photos not all finished yet but the trousers are shiney and the waistcoat are shiney.


Think you may bed right about the primer Laurie and Alan

I don't think that there's a great deal of difference between one brand of matt / dull coat & another.


The most important thing is to mix it thoroughly - more, much more than you would do with paint.


That ensures the matting agent (talc, mica etc) is properly mixed & gives the desired matt look. Poorly mixed matt products will cause a glossy effect.

I wonder Robert if it is that you are working under bright lights and with the deep folds in the clothing and reflecting this is enhancing the shine.

No Laurie I put on the light ( spot to show up the shine. If I'm normally painting I use natural light or a spot that's further away but for the pics I decided to put on the spot so you could see the shine in the paint. What I have done now is put the part painted figs in a small container with lid on and painted them all liberally with Vallejo thinners. I'll leave for a couple of hours and then wipe what paint I can off. Leave to air dry after that and repeat if need be. I should have the required Vallejo paints in a couple of days and with it comes the black primer. I'll get some more pics in a couple of days. The life colour set of 5 face paints seem to work fine on the plastic once primed but I want to get them right so patience here is the key ( and I'll paint the figs this time not try to a/b

With the vallejo white primer I had the same result, my paint wasn't matt but satin or even glossy, after I put in some grey in the white primer, this problem was gone.

Once I get chance to restart the figures when I get the new primer and Vallejo paints ill naked a new start on them, the Vallejo thinners took 60 percent of paint mistake so far maybe another clean over the weekend and then back to square one eh !!! Start reprinting ( stay tuned for more pics son eh?
