Primer yet again !

Guys here's me trying yet again to airbrush with Vallejo primer. If I could only spray this without constant nozzle blockages. I've tried thinning it, adjusting air pressure, larger needle size (.3) a cooler room temperature but finally given up on this product.


So please please please give your reccomendations for an alternative. I prefer not to use rattle cans simply because they seem so expensive by comparison.

Alan - I am not sure why you had such a problem but a few drops of their flow improver may help.


That said Vallejo primer is not the best and I would suggest the Badger Stynylez primer.  A few tips for using it (and Vallejo)


1/ make sure you thoroughly clean the model with i.p.a. to make sure there is no grease on the model just before spraying.  Dont forget finger grease is an enemy not just mold release agent.


2/ spray in very light coats, switch to air to dry down between coats.  You can do this in one spraying session


3/ leave the model not just to dry but to fully cure before doing anything else.  I leave it 24 hours but some people say 48 hours.  I believe humidity etc can be an issue.


4/ before spraying make sure you shake it up well, I do mean give it a very good and long shake specially if it has been laying around a long time.

I spray it through a 0.4 needle at around 20psi unthinned


You may need to thin it with a smaller needle.  Badger suggest a 0.5 needle.


You may also benefit from some flow improver.  You can still get needle tip drying though but between light coats clean off the tip.  I have H&S with a tip that can be cleaned by 'pinching' it with a cloth.  Some airbrushes are not so easy but usually a cotton bud dipped in thinner helps.

I have used tamiya primer with mixed results but by far the easiest and best results I got is with Alclad gry primer/micro filler. This stuf does not need to be thinned, goes on like glass and sands beautifully.


It also does not glog the AB tip. It is a little expensive but if your carefull quite a few models can be primed with it.

Thank you Barry, I Also have a H&S which I use for my colour. I notice John sells .4 and .6 needles/nozzles do you think I would be better off buying the .4 or .6  for applying Stynylrez.

Hi Alan,


Yes I would suggest a .4, you can get some fairly fine lines with it and it is a good size.  I use it most of the time and only rarely use a .2.

I use this primer, but with medium retarder. It helps. Although, for larger areas, a big old rattle can from wilkinsons is very good, quick drying and cheap.

I second everything Barry says - Stynylrez is so far advanced from every other product. I poured two bottles of Vallejo primer down the sink after my third session with Stynylrez, the bottles were more useful than the gunk inside them! I know it's expensive, but you'll be amazed by the finish you get - I'm blowing it through a .35 and it somehow never clogs and there is almost zero overspray, so very little gets wasted.

I have been meaning to just get a cheap AB,which has a .4 or 5 needle,just for priming,but just have,


not got to do it let,


I do have a bottle of the badger primer,but have not tried it as let,

You have got a bad bottle - it's got Vallejo written on it!  . Seriously though, I never had a strip-free session with this stuff, so I went back to rattle cans, and was happy (despite the foul smell, and appalling wastage) at least it was totally consistent. I doubt anyone will better this badger stuff, unless someone makes it for a couple of quid for 250 ml!!
