Method 1: Use Paint (built-in)
This is the simplest and requires no download.
Steps
- Right-click the image → Open with → Paint
- At the top, click Resize
- Choose:
- Percentage: try 10% or 5%
- Or Pixels: set width to something like 200–800 px (forums often resize anyway)
- Press OK
- Click File → Save as → JPEG
- Save with a new name.
This often reduces the image from MB →
<100 KB.
If still too large, repeat the process and resize smaller.
Method 2: Use the Photos App
Good for quick compression.
- Open the image in Photos
- Click the three dots (…) → Resize
- Choose:
- S (Small)
- or Define custom dimensions
- Save.
Method 3: Use an Online Compressor (fastest)
If you’re okay uploading the image:
- TinyJPG
- CompressJPEG
- iLoveIMG
Set the smallest quality/size options.

Online tools may reduce quality more dramatically but easily get down to
10–50 KB.
Method 4: Use ImageMagick (advanced, huge compression)
If you want full control:
- Install ImageMagick
- Use command:
magick input.jpg -resize 20% -quality 20 output.jpg
You can tweak
resize and
quality to reach a few KB.
Tips to reach “a few KB”
To get an image
<20 KB, you usually need:
- Width ≤ 500 px
- JPEG quality 20–40%
- Avoid PNG unless it's line art—PNG stays large
