Hello my Friends.
I have decided to quit smoking and I would like people to help me by pm ing me with encouragement.
My quit date is Monday 3rd of February.
I have been to the chemist today and recieved free patches and a mouth spray and I will be monitored once a week by the Pharmacist.
Every single bit of help will be much appreciated.
From Monday I will post here how I am getting on.
I know it is going to be hard but I am determined.
All the best.
Ralph.

Lots of luck with that Ralph. It isn't easy. I stopped January 1st......... and right now I'd chew through the wall to get to a cigarette.

Patches and gum are useless my friend and a waste of time. If you are determined and I assume reasonably healthy then go to you doctor and request a script for Champix (Varenicline). You will get a starter pack of half doze working to full doze after eight days then it's a 12 week duration. You take one am and pm and I can assure you that you will have already stopped before the eighth day.

The problem with patches etc are that the are nicotine replacement therapies therefore much more difficult to stop as you don't deal with the nicotine addiction from day one.

Champix is a receptor blocker for nicotine which is why it is so successful.

Some tips.

Always take with food.

Be prepared for the withdrawal symptoms as they will come and peak after two weeks. If you are prepared you can deal with them. People mistake the withdrawal symptoms as a side effect of Champix but they are infact withdrawal symptoms.

Finally the dreams are fantastic and once again wrongly attributed to Champix but again they are a withdrawal effect.

Go speak to Dr Feelgood and good luck

Been there done that twenty years ago when there was no patches gum or help lines and such like I just stopped and o said to myself if I can go one day I can go two days then a week then two weeks and by the third week it was all over and I never smoked again so I wish you all the luck.

Another stat which is unusual, the number three is important to know. You will find day three and week three the most challenging. No rhyme or reason to it

All the best Ralph.

I stopped in 1996 and used the money i saved to buy a CBR600. Best thing i ever did health wise. I just stopped and like Peter there was no real help around in those days. It was hard, i am not going to deny that. I've had one or two cigs since but now i don't miss them at all. I'm sure with plenty of encouragement from the guys n gals on here you'll be fine.

For what it's worth Ralph, I offer all the best wishes I can. Never been partial to the weed myself, but I know this is a tough undertaking. Best of luck.

Best of luck to you Ralph.

I tried to stop many times over the years using everything I could get my hands on, even hypnosis and prescription drugs. I always ended up going back though so I know how hard it can be for some people. Others on the other hand find it remarkably easy, I hope you are one of those.

Eventually I moved onto a vape about 5 years ago and haven't had a fag since. It's not ideal, and I'm not recommending it, but it got me off the cancer sticks at least which is a big step in the right direction.

I’ll be praying for you Ralph never smoked but chewed tobacco for years I quit that back in 2005 and never looked back

Good on you ralph , i quit about 25 years ago and im glad i did , have you seen how much they cost these days !!!! Like the other guys there were no patches or help , it was willpower or nothing. Personally I found that thinking about what i was going to buy with the money id saved from not buying cigs helped. Every time i felt like a cig i just thought , no ,if i can go without till the end of the week then i can afford that CD or whatever and it helped to focus on something. Perhaps theres a nice kit you fancy but thought it was a bit too expensive? Its good to have a bit of an incentive , cheers tony

Hi Ralph
Well done you. Get through it. It is bloody hard but so worth it.
I stopped smoking about 30 years ago and found it very hard. I am sure my current good health and financial security are thanks in large part to my giving up.

Well done in making the decision Ralph. I started smoking in 1961, and finally gave up in 2007, after a couple of earlier attempts. Suddenly I have money in the bank, and my house, car, and clothes don't smell like an ashtray any more!
I found the patches helped, but after 9 days I suffered an allergic reaction to them, which itched so badly I decided I was never going to go through all that again, which gave me the willpower to become a non-smoker. Suddenly I have money in the bank, and my house, car, and clothes don't smell like an ashtray any more!
Best of luck mate.
Pete

Good luck Ralph - I found gum made the task easier (but then ended up chewing Nicorette for 5 years). I finally quit the gum last year! I figured that gum was healthier than smoking. I definitely did not go down the Chav Pipe route - you're not quitting smoking with those things, merely changing what you're smoking. Everyone I know who's vaped never lets them stray more than 2 feet away from their lips too - ridiculous things.

Hi Ralph if you can it will be the best thing you've ever do.
I gave up 7 years ago in hospital but I had to no choice if I had I would have left, most people on here know my condition they might not know what I've been through but I wouldn't wish that on anybody, the only advice I would give, treat yourself with the money you save, spend as you go on yourself a reward for what you've achieved, you're still at young strapping lad so make the most of it.
Pete.

Excellent Ralph, great idea!!!

Having never smoked but addicted to a certain gun thingy, can only wish you the best. Put the money you use to waste on fags and you will no doubt be shocked, then treat yourself you will have earned it!!!

A great big thank you to each and everyone of you.
There has been a change of plan.
Today will be my last day of smoking and hell will be here tomorrow but screw hell I want a new expensive fishing rod and reel.

I quit about 10 years a go. Just will power and gritted teeth.
The only advice I can offer is to change your routines. You’ll find that you associate certain activities or points in the day with smoking, such as after dinner. Try to identify those times and come up with an alternative.
You’ll break the habits eventually.
