I should have researched more carefully. The instructions seem to suggest that both parts of the U/C doors are attached to the U/C leg, but only the curved part is - the mostly rectangular bit is angled outwards, and overlaps the curvy bit.

Not an enjoyable kit to build, but I could/should have built it a lot better.
