Definitely wax from my point of view. You want the gilding to show as bright as possible.

The gold on black looks great. Would the black colouring on the bulkheads be some sort of water proofing tar?? Stain seems better than paint.
Yes the largest warship of it's time 102 guns, she had 118 gun port but could only mount 102 making her most powerfully armed warship in the world at that time
Hi Jim unknown mate King Charles I insisted on gold decorations on black timber Royal Navy specifications combined pitch, sulfur, and rosin to achieve this finish. The white hull was anti foul paint.

There is 4 on the fwd bulkhead and there yet to be installed in the hull
