    Advice needed re: window frames

40 thou (1mm) plastic card would be my go to as well. Door and window frames could be easy to make from plastic strip rather than sheet as well though. If you do go that way, evergreen precut strip is light years better than slaters, it’s square edged for a start…. Glazing bars are a bit...

    Bodmin Moor

That’s very very good. Some shots look pretty much real. Love the lamplight from the platelayers hut as well. It’s a lovely yellow oil lamp colour….

    A400 flying low

We get them regularly as well, right over the house. Go over at about 500. OK during the day, but noisy at night. Seems to be training flights out of Brize Norton for us, and I think they use the local King Alfred’s tower as a sighting point. According to the ADS-B app they then turn right...

Train people - GWR Green & yellow help

https://www.phoenix-paints.co.uk/products/paint-products/precisionrailway/bigfour/gwrbigfour/14p100 This stuff sprays well using their quick drying air thinners. It was my go to in my railway modelling days. It’s not lacquer, but I can’t find anything better.

Train people - GWR Green & yellow help

Paragon do it in enamels here. https://www.paragonpaints.co.uk/gwr-colours.html Not sure of a supplier for lacquers, but I’ll keep looking.

Brooklyn 1/10th scale bust, Pedro Fernandez Works

Great stuff. Very unusual subject as well. Rendered in your usual superb fashion though.

    Nervous Newbie.

Good intro Tony. Nothing mad about that, very nice work 👍

    Book recommendations?

The Osprey single subject books can usually be picked up cheap as well. All probably date from the nineties when these sort of books were written more as instruction than as an extended sales pitch for a company.

Another approach is to look out for a job lot of such books on something like EBay, keep the ones you like, and resell or charity shop the others. After all, products change, but basic techniques remain the same more or less….Tony Greenland’s Panzer modelling masterclass (Windrow and Green...

What scale do you prefer most?

I’ve replied, but the figure scales, 120mm, 54mm, 28mm, etc are sadly absent. In my case I like 1/12 for bikes, 1/24 or 5 for cars, 1/35 for armour and softs, 1/48 for aircraft, 1/76.2 for railways, and 28mm for figures. I have worked outside these scales often, especially for figures, though...

12th Scale Bakers Waggonette ----- Scratchbuilt

Superb work. The pin striping and lettering is absolutely top of the line. Any chance of a picture with an object of relatable size so we can judge how large (or small) this really is? I’m guessing by the immaculate quality of the sign writing that it’s quite large, but it really is hard to...

    Book recommendations?

A book that covers “everything “ is likely to not go into much detail on anything. You will therefore find that quite limited in usefulness. Perhaps the way to go about this is to identify what aspects of modelling you want more information about, and seek out a book that covers it? After...

    Knowing/Learning when to stop!

Part of the learning curve I’m afraid. Time to finish is when it looks right. You can’t really teach it, as it’s a personal choice. From my experience I would put scratches, scuffs and rust on before the dust and sand though. That’s how the effects build up in real life…… With things like...

The rise of Warhammer, et al, V "regular" traditional scale modelling?

To be fair to GW, they do mould all of their figures in the uk, so more power and respect to them.

The rise of Warhammer, et al, V "regular" traditional scale modelling?

As to being new boys….warhammer started up in the early 1980s….several years before Dragon kits and a decade before Vallejo launched their model colour range. This was around the time that Airfix and Triang went broke, so in some ways you could say they saved the hobby 😁

The rise of Warhammer, et al, V "regular" traditional scale modelling?

GW (tongue in cheek, the Nottingham mafia to some in the figure hobby) have traditionally had their own stores. This shift in their selling strategy, taking space in more traditional outlets, is more to do with generating an increased market share without the cost and hassle of running their...

    Movie time

Similar thing could have happened in Bridge too far. Audrey Hepburn was asked to play Kate Ter Horst, but refused. She was there, as a teenager, helping the doctor, and found it too traumatic. If she had played that part she would have taken a message from an actor playing herself….. As...

    Movie time

Personally I love the 40s/50s British B & W war films. Particular favourites are The Cruel sea, In Which We Serve, Dunkirk (the original, and far the best), and Went the day well. Usually manage to see them once a year, along with others of the period. I think it was the high point of British...
