Gretchen, 1/10th bust, Pedro Fernandez Works

So, a radical approach for me. I've just primed her, and the instructions say 'leave for 24 hours' - so I'm actually going to leave the primer to cure for 24 hours! Usually I'd wait ten minutes and then start zenithal highlighting. Be interesting to see if the finish is any more durable after...

Gretchen, 1/10th bust, Pedro Fernandez Works

This figure is described as an 80's German punk. Well, I'm going to paint her as an 80's London punk - not sure it'll make much difference, tbh. I was 17 years old in 1976, which is generally regarded as the birth year of punk. I was living in inner London, and so I was fortunate enough to see...

    Latest Acquisitions (2025)

These three were a Black Friday purchase from Pedro Fernandez Works (about 20% off, I think). Went under the tree as a present from me, to me - which are always the best presents, of course.

How much modelling time over the festive period?

No modelling or painting for me, unfortunately. But I'm scratching the creative itch by making paper chains and party hats - that seems to be allowed.

The Lioness, 1/10th scale, Stella Argentis

OK, I think this is done. More pictures in the relevant completed section:

The Lioness, 1/10th scale, from Stella Argentis

Very pleased with this - I feel I've made some real advances in techniques, especially smooth blends and skin tones. and for scale:

The Lioness, 1/10th scale, Stella Argentis

Thanks Neil - you raise some interesting (and excellent!) points. I 100% agree about good sculpts being easier to paint - this one, for example, is excellent, and that means paint placement is telegraphed to the painter, rather than needing lots of analysis and interpretation. Plus some very...

The Lioness, 1/10th scale, Stella Argentis

I think maybe military modellers have it easy with colour selection, as you have a historical precedent to stick to. I've been all over the place with colour selection on this - but I'm steadily getting happier with my choices. In painting the suede loincloth I used a mixture I've had success...

The Lioness, 1/10th scale, Stella Argentis

Bit more work on this. I've smoothed out the skin tones and blocked out the leather, the metallics, and her locks in black. Pretty happy with the loincloth, but I really don't know what I'm doing with the waistband. I tried treating it like leather, but it's too smooth and rounded for...

    Ganesha, hand-carved in Rajasthan

That's very kind, Tony. I'm well pleased with it - to me it justifies painting over what was a very nice piece of woodcarving, that could've been left in its original form perfectly well:

The Lioness, 1/10th scale, Stella Argentis

So, I've done some blocking in, roughed in some skin tones and painted her headwrap. And I now have a couple of decisions to make. The big one - should I switch to oils? This figure lends itself to oils, I reckon, but I bottled it, and now I'm wondering whether that was a mistake. The skin...

The Lioness, 1/10th scale, Stella Argentis

I love this powerfully built gladiatrix (?) from Stella Argentis. There are three versions, a full figure, a bust, and this half-figure. Beautifully presented, she needed very little tidying before gluing up. Then primed in, black, brown oxide and a little desert tan. I love the way figures...

    Deen + Dunya

This is a 1/10th scale bust called Yildiz, by Pedro Fernandez Works. Hope you like it. And for scale: Pedro Fernandez Works also produces two other excellent ethnically diverse female busts (Brooklyn and Anusha) that are not military and not negative - witches, enslaved, naked, etc etc...

    Deen and Dunya

I do have difficulties knowing where to place some of these figures. 'Figures WWI and after' doesn't sound quite right, but she's certainly not Fantasy or Sci-fi - that Sony Walkman definitely places her in the real world. Anyhow, this is a first attempt at painting a proper figure after...

    Ganesha, hand-carved in Rajasthan

I got this wooden statue on a trip to India earlier this year, and was inspired to paint him by the many painted wooden icons I saw while I was there. This proved very easy to paint - nice and big, not much shading required, and the slightly rough detail of the wood carving made precision...

    Ganesha, hand-carved in Rajasthan

Well we've still not moved to Norwich - yet. Our house in Kendal is off the market, to be relaunched in Jan, so I've been able to recommussion my hobby room and get some painting done! Just started on Ganesha.
