    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

I've made a start on the cockpit today and whilst I am no expert on this or US aircraft in general, it's not looking that great. I've decided that the best way to hide a cockpit is to fit one of these: I've got these lads in the cupboard. The chap in the middle might be a bit overdressed for...

    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

This is a Kittyhawk III to those of us on the European side of the Atlantic. It had an Allison V-1710-18 engine, rated at 1200 h.p. for take off and 1125 h.p. at 17,300 feet, Merlin's being prioritised elsewhere. The kit is from John (Scale Model Shop) and as is invariably the case was...

    Kotare 1/32 Spitfire Mk. I

Build thread here, for what it's worth: https://www.scale-models.co.uk/threads/kotare-spitfire-mk-ia-1-32.41740/ I've finished this OOB with the exception of an HGW harness. It is completed in one of the three kit options, as a Mk. I of No. 234 Squadron, coded AZ-H. This aircraft has become...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

Finally finished the decals, at least all those I'm applying. Kotare supply dozens of individual and miniscule decals for all the dzeus fasteners on the engine cowlings but they, for me, were a bridge too far. They are a very nice and unusual detail and I'm sure some would have fun applying...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

Finally something I really don't like about this kit (just my opinion). The decals! There's nothing intrinsically wrong with them, they go on alright, but look at the code letters and roundel on this side: That's all one decal, which might be okay at 1/72 but at this scale is ridiculous...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

I haven't given up! Camouflage has been applied as and when I've had a chance. It's been masked for the hard edge usually seen on Spitfires of this period, in a factory finish. Just some walkway lines to spray and then on to varnish and decals.

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

Got back at 2.00 am Sunday morning (private charter to some godforsaken corner of Birmingham airport!) and have managed to get a bit more done. Goodness me, it looks like a Spitfire. This is the best fitting and engineered 1/32 Spitfire I have built, and I've built them all. The fit is...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

I think it is this part, built into the harness: It would sit between bum and parachute pack, as originally described.

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

I did a bit of googling after my last post and discovered a bit of obscure history! From Grace's Guide to British Industrial History. "In 1916, when the Great War was at its height, in response to an urgent National demand, Mr. G. W. Leeson, who had spent over fifteen years experimenting to...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

I've never read of a pilot doing that. The thing that many of them did in a crash landing was strike the gunsight with their head/face, even given their restraints. Some were killed this way. Unfortunately a gunsight must be positioned in a pilot's line of vision, that is in front of his face...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

Generally four piece. The Sutton, as in this and most British aircraft had an extra part that passed over the pilot's shoulders and through a slot in the head armour to an attachment in the rear fuselage (2 in the image below) The other part of the shoulder restraint (1 in the image below)...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

This will be it until after the week-end. I've managed to squeeze in a little time. The fuselage is essentially finished. It's an excellent fit and the way it is engineered, so that details like the rivets on the spine are preserved is very clever. You can see I've primed and sprayed an area...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

I know I'll have no time over the next few days, so I've made just enough time to get the cockpit in and the fuselage halves joined. It's just dry fitted here because I want to make sure the next stage, engine covers etc., fit before I glue it. The fit looks good, tight but good so hopefully...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

Close of play and a dry fit of the starboard side of the cockpit, just to give an idea of what you get. The other side is just as good. It is definitely the best Spitfire cockpit I've built 'out of the box' in this or any scale.

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

So after a bit of a delay I was able to have a pretty much full morning on this. The decal sheet, unlike most kits even at this scale, comes with a complete set of stencils and placards for the cockpit. It's probably about 30 decals, almost all of which I have used. That took a while! For me...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

This is it for now, as I have to make up the harness and the weather is too nice to sit doing that for a couple of hours! Neither of the frames (instrument panel and seat) are glued in place. They are just pushed in, which tells you how good the fit is. It's so good you have to be careful about...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

I've had a couple of hours this morning, and as the instrument panel gets fitted pretty much on the starting line, I thought I'd get that done. If you are allergic to doing decals, look away now! There are 26 decals for the panel, I've done 25 as my version does not have the flap position...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

I've made a start of sorts. I hate mixing colours which are then hard to match in a few weeks when I suddenly decide I need one again. I've used Sovereign Hobbies 'eau de nil' for Supermarine green. It's a colour I had in the draw, still in its cellophane - no idea why I bought it. The interior...

When or how do you cull your completed models?

I'm just wondering if people can be as brutal as required, eventually consigning completed models to the bin. I have once again reached breaking point. All available display shelves are replete with models and the final refuge, the top of the cupboard in my model area, now looks more crowded...

    Kotare Spitfire Mk.Ia (1/32)

Well, I've only gone and done it! I've bought one of the Kotare Spitfires. I've had a quick peek in the box and am very, very impressed. The parts count is quite low for a model in this scale, but they all look to be very nice and crisply molded. Decals etc. all look nice. The most impressive...
