    A tale of two Hurricanes

To keep the two kits vaguely in sync I have pressed on with the Fly Hurricane's cockpit. This is now pretty much done. There are a couple of almost microscopic P-E parts missing (one got blown off to heaven knows where by the airbrush!) but I'm absolutely not bovvered. That is the kit...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

I've got the Fly cockpit done as far as I can. It and the seat harness are primed and ready to paint tomorrow. The armour and instrument panel fit into the fuselage which means that I doubt that this and the Revell kit will be built exactly in parallel. This has been, shall we say, a bit of a...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

Just to show I've started: This is the product of about four or five hours of work, which gives an idea of how tricky the Fly kit can be. To clean up that side framing probably took a good half hour. If you like a challenge it's the one for you! I've decided that I'll complete the cockpit on...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

As the title suggests, I’m going to embark on a more or less simultaneous build of not one but two Hawker Hurricanes in 1/32 scale. The two kits are very different, and this is not intended as a ‘this kit is better than that kit’ kind of exercise, which would be like comparing apples to oranges...

    A bit of a quandary

So, as the title suggests, I'm in a bit of a quandary. This can be illustrated by the power of photography. As you can see, that's not one but two Hurricanes. I bought the first (Fly) kit before I knew that the second (Revell) kit existed. My initial thought was to build the Revell kit since...

    Attaching windows

I use G-S Hypo Cement. It has a gel like consistency and a needle applicator making it easy to keep away from areas where it's not wanted. It makes a very strong bond. A tube will last for a very long time. It will not fog clear parts and dries clear itself.

1/32 Special Hobby Westland Whirlwind - Operation Starkey.

First, a brief bit of history. You can skip this bit Operation Starkey was a mock invasion of the Pas de Calais region, carried out in September 1943. No. 263 Squadron’s role was attacks on naval guns and flak positions at Hardelot in order to protect the ships of Operation Menagerie, carrying...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

Closing in on the finishing line now. Trying to make the airframe look a bit tired (not filthy, a different thing) as evidenced in the pictures of 263 Squadron's Whirlwinds, taken at Manston at this time. They weren't big aircraft and I suspect that they were washed down before the black and...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

Daughter No.1's household is officially Covid positive, which is not good. On the other hand this means that I have not been run ragged all weekend by two small people a.k.a. the grandchildren, meaning that I've made unexpected progress on the Whirlwind. This is straight after any masking came...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

I've had a bit of unexpected time to carry on with this, meaning it's more or less built and in a nice coat of grey primer. I won't have much time over the weekend, but I'm still hoping to get this done in the next few days. It was a beautiful looking aeroplane, the Whirlwind. I reckon it...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

I made the bombs and associated bits, which led me to the question of colours. Sometimes you just get lucky! After scrabbling at the back of the draws I found these, both unopened. It's just as well because the 'Buff' is an original White Ensign paint, and they sold out to Sovereign Hobbies...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

Just a quick update. Flight Lieutenant Dave Ross, who flew this aircraft on the Operation Starkey missions is installed. The undercarriage doors are clearly not designed to be shut on this model. A fair bit of huffing and puffing was involved to get them this far! The nacelle fit to the wing...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

This has gone surprisingly well. Fuselage and wings are not yet attached, just a dry fit. Obviously 'in flight' means with a pilot, hence the fella in the background who I have barely even started. He's a resin figure from PJ Productions who was already tucked away in a draw, probably meant...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

I did say I wouldn't do a gazillion updates, because this is the second time I've built this kit, but having had a fair bit of time over the last couple of days I thought that I'd show I have actually started...this time :) Same old kit. Not bad, some mouldings are a bit soft but everything...

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

I was trying to work out why a random bomb was lying on the field and found this. It was obviously part of a wider photo shoot. I guess they know what they are doing :)

    Another 1/32 Westland Whirlwind

Well, it's been a LONG time since I posted this but I've finally got underway. This may well be a protracted build because, once again, minor inconveniences like earning a living are definitely going to interfere! I'm also changing the subject. I don't want yet another British aircraft in a...

    NEW Airfix 1/24 Spitfire IX.

Yep. The serial number was applied by the manufacturer, along with national markings etc. The codes were applied at the squadron. I wish they weren't. It was a b*gger slicing up the decal to fit as if under the letters I'd already sprayed :) When this aircraft was re-coded as JE-J, when Johnson...

    NEW Airfix 1/24 Spitfire IX.

This is a virtual walkaround of said kit. There is a build thread here: https://www.scale-models.co.uk/threads/1-24-airfix-spitfire-the-new-one.40799/page-7 The kit is completed in one of the options provided. It is EN398, as flown by Flight Lieutenant Ian Keltie of No. 402 'City of Winnipeg'...

1/24 Airfix Spitfire (the new one)

Rather annoyingly the small matter of earning a living has reared its ugly head. I've had some time over the last few days to get as close as I can to finishing but I may fall short of the finishing line this week :) All the decals went on nicely, though they are somewhat impervious to...

1/24 Airfix Spitfire (the new one)

The Mk II I.F.F. system (with the wires from tail lane to fuselage) was phased out through 1943 for aircraft of the metropolitan air force. This aircraft was delivered to the squadron in February that year. It doesn't have the antenna for the later version of IFF and I've convinced myself I can...
