    Review Favorite Old Builds

Love that, Paul, the engineers worked equally hard. I've just seen a FAMO in the flesh in a Museum in Normandy- my god it's a BEAST! My son and my grandson- he's 6'8" !! (my son is his uncle, not his dad, who is almost as tall,-but not quite) I can recommend the Overlord Museum- probably...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Just a quickie from me. I’ve assembled the second batch of six GIs- I calculate that I need at least 18 guys along the covered bit before I can nail it down and carry on with the next stage of the ship. Much as I hated them I decided to use up the remaining Italeri torsos, and also the Italeri...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Well that WAS fun! I was planning to leave the accessories off until I was ready to place all the figures, but I just can’t wait that long! There are going to be so many on this deck and I wanted to see how they worked together. So I have placed most of the details, some of them with PVA, so I...

Model figures - British Troops at rest - where to find?

theyre not exactly relaxed poses but they don't have kit or webbing so they are easily adaptable

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

As always ,thanks very much everyone. I’ve been putting it off but I had to start eventually- the weathering. I had planned to leave it until everything was together but I realised that was utter folly . There’s so much stuff on top of stuff that I need to do the ‘background’ parts before they...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Note also the use of inflated life preservers on the heavy kit- I'm going to try for that as well....

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

As ever, thanks everyone for the continued interest. Well who would have thought it? They’re painted and I quite enjoyed the experience! But not at first... As discussed I batch-painted them, and I found it immensely tedious, especially by the time I got to number six every time. I didn’t take...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Thanks as ever for the encouragement and comments, chaps. I thought I would just post a couple of pics of the logistics of this operation-the ‘quartermasters stores’ if you will. Here are some sets already sorted It got really tedious putting things into bags one by one -especially the...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

I've done a bit more on these GI’s, fettling and adding some of the web equipment This has been quite a learning curve for this project, and I’m glad I limited the number to six. I thought it would be a good idea to press the ammo pouches(many of which are individual- GRRR) into the wet...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Thanks for the comments and interest chaps! So let’s get on with these Italeri guys. I’m going to do them in small batches so I don’t get overwhelmed with the sheer weight of numbers! I have at least forty GI figures to work with, and I haven’t even counted the US Navy guys I have for the crew...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Thanks a lot guys. So, as promised, let’s finally make a start on the figures. Over the years I have collected various US Infantry sets by different manufacturers and some are better than others, but hopefully the variety will reflect the general weirdnesses of humanity. This is the pool from...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Many thanks everyone for the encouragement Well I’ve now primed it all and I have been mulling over how best to proceed from there. As you can see I’ve made a start on the Boat Deck above, just to make sure it all fits together before I nail everything down... The blobby thing in masking...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Right then, I’ve been busy with the covered walkway It was bit tricky to figure out a way of temporarily holding it all together whilst I fitted the beams, but I got there in the end The original intention was to leave the top open and simply close it with the deck above(which is going to be...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Cheers Greg, I hoped you would be interested. A quick update. I thought of a way to get the seams on the inside of the funnel. I made templates of the outside segments using masking tape, and cut them out of the pewter sheet (wine bottle foil, actually ). Then I stuck them (and my fingers)...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

I’ve now fitted the sloping deck , which just fits around the superstructure. That will sit on the foamboard base level so it’s easy to keep everything square. While I was dithering about rivets I got on with some of the other deck details, namely these two ventilators I had already printed...

Glad you like it everyone I've added the vertical fins/stanchions to the inside of the upstand walls (gunwhales...?)

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Right, Christmas is over and I’ve done all I am obliged to do for SWMBO and others (well,mostly...) the family have dispersed around the country and now I can knuckle down and report on the progress of SS Jeremiah O’Brien. Some of this work was done a while ago but I just didn’t have time to...

My best model build of 2024

For me it's got to be this, Last Stand of the 45th- an entirely conjectural diorama in 54mm scale using Airfix ,Historex and scratchbuilt parts. There are eighteen figures in total and it took me 3 years on and off! And it won me a silver medal at the BMSS Nationals.

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

I’m going away for a few days so I want to post something so you don’t forget me... I’m still mulling over the various options for rivets but in the meantime I have created the upstand walls of this deck, which I am calling the Main Deck. There is actually a break between the main hull sides and...
