    Thoughts on 1/144 scale.

Colin, I've built a few 1/144's of various sorts. There are plenty to choose from including some very nice commercial aircraft and most are excellent little kits...... I think Nick's idea is great, so how about jumping in the deep end and propose a 1/144 Group Build? It would be good to...

Sqn. Ldr. Basil Gerald 'Stapme' Stapleton's Typhoon ride!.....Normandy, 1944

Leading edge painted. There are yellow decals for this, but it was easier to paint them on. Under side decals on. These are one piece and go directly over the wheel thingies. To change to fitting the full u/c., you have to cut around them and discard the now redundant two pieces of flat...

Sqn. Ldr. Basil Gerald 'Stapme' Stapleton's Typhoon ride!.....Normandy, 1944

Nice one chaps! Thanks Jim. Tony. It went together well. At this stage, being in flying mode there were only a dozen or so bits to stick together. To build an all bells and whistles version would take a fair bit of time as there are loads of internal bits. Some of which look very fiddly and...

Sqn. Ldr. Basil Gerald 'Stapme' Stapleton's Typhoon ride!.....Normandy, 1944

Camouflage marked out with a pencil and then a first brush coat of Dk. green paint applied..... Looks a bit blue-ish, but it really is grey as per previous pickie. Cheers. Ron

Sqn. Ldr. Basil Gerald 'Stapme' Stapleton's Typhoon ride!.....Normandy, 1944

Whilst piloting his Spitfire during the B.o.B., Basil Stapleton was the man who actually shot down Franz Von Werra. How about that Mucker! Stapleton's career is well worth a quick read..... This kit was kindly sent to me by member Lee W, along with an FW190 as part of an Airfix 'Dogfight...

    Completed...McClellan- Barclay wacky 1940 camouflage. Ron's wanderings!

Just a few more pictures to tidy things up a tad. This McC,- B. was a real character and well worth a read about..... A thought on canopy painting... I refuse to spend my pensioners dinner money on a few bits of sticky masking tape, which can cost more than the model itself! In any...

Trying to have 1/72 fun with the 1940 McClellan- Barclay wacky camouflage schemes.

Just read my last post. "It's good" is not how I meant to write it! How snotty can you get! I meant it was good to do..... Anyway, here is the finished aircraft. I eventually went off on one and did my own thing, only loosely based on McC and B's concept. It was a fun task, but hard to paint...

Trying to have 1/72 fun with the 1940 McClellan- Barclay wacky camouflage schemes.

I was going to keep the underside kind'a simple, similar to the Buffalo, but I thought, Nah! So I gave my imagination free rein. The overall exercise is proving to be a difficult one , but in a perverse sort of way I'm enjoying it. Even if "The shapes seem pretty narrow, which won't help to...

Trying to have 1/72 fun with the 1940 McClellan- Barclay wacky camouflage schemes.

Apart from darkening things a tad and a bit of sharpening up of the paintwork, I'm happy with this 'Arrangement' for the main wings and tailplane. Cheers. Ron

Trying to have 1/72 fun with the 1940 McClellan- Barclay wacky camouflage schemes.

Thanks for your support Tony. In answer to your question..... Today, I've brushed on these colours freehand. This is the first coat, hence the pale appearance. As can be seen from the still visible pencil lines, there will be other colours and more layers of paint added. I just want to get an...

Trying to have 1/72 fun with the 1940 McClellan- Barclay wacky camouflage schemes.

I Doubt it, Jim. Thanks for the interest too. ;) Using those diddy pots of paints, I've brushed on an all over coat of light grey. This morning I started to mark out the pattern on the wing surfaces using an HB pencil. Totally from my nut. Cheers. Ron

Trying to have 1/72 fun with the 1940 McClellan- Barclay wacky camouflage schemes.

I can't think where to put this 'cos it isn't really a full build, more an attempt at a weird camouflage. If required, can mods move it please? McClellan- Barclay was one heck of a bloke. Well worth reading up on. Please note, the actual aircraft chosen is not intended to be historically...

Completed........ "Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside." Kent Coast July 1940.

This is the excellent Me109 Airfix 'Starter kit'. I'm not all that interested in the accuracy of kits. I just build what's in the box and enjoy myself. The paint job is not of a particular aircraft. To add a bit of colour, I just fancied giving it a yellow nose and rudder. Brush painted I used...

"Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!" Kent Coast, July 1940.

I've finished this. Thanks to those good folks who posted nice and encouraging comments during the build. Here comes the tidal surge...... I'll post some more pickies over in 'Completed Dioramas' asap. Cheers. Ron

"Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!" Kent Coast, July 1940.

I've slotted the aircraft into the hole in the plastic. A dry fit.... Time to add a bit of 'Life' to the pool surface. Cheers. Ron

"Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!" Kent Coast, July 1940.

Update.... I've started on the 'water' Using a bit of clear plastic from a food container, I've put a lid on the rockpool. The hole in the surface is where the aircraft will slot in. I then sprinkled some more sand around the edges of the plastic to blend things in a tad...

"Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!" Kent Coast, July 1940.

Oops! Belated thanks to 453 and Steve for the nice posts. Sorry for the late response.... :upside: Raining, so this morning I decided that instead of just a big hole in the sand, I would add a bit of interest to it and make it a sort of rock pool. The initial work complete, with a bit of...

"Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!" Kent Coast, July 1940.

Today is warm enough to venture into my garage, workshop or tip. Take yer pick! I've made a start on the beach. I stuck two bits of polystyrene blocks together. Hacked out a pool and then sprinkled the surface with ordinary builder's red sand and also added a bit of Budgie grit to the surface...

"Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside!" Kent Coast, July 1940.

I'm using one of those great little Airfix 'Starter Kits', including the paints and glue! No masking, freehand brush painted using the supplied pot paints. The yellow, although not in the box, is a pot paint from another starter kit. No swasty ticker decals, so I hand ritted them...

Une Ferme Abandonnee.....and some squatters! Normandy, July 1944

Paul. Sometimes simple is best....For me anyway. ;) Dave. That sweeping brush? She has had another since then! I've made me a diddy farm field gate. A bit posh, but I got carried away when marking it out! Made from plastic card, suitable marked out with a pencil and cut out with a Stanley...
