    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

I have painted the Neutral Grey. As usual with something big, its best to work in small stages. Got there is the end. I managed all this on just one of the large cups of paint! Tomorrow there will be a lot of masking before doing the sand colour.

Well everyone. This beautiful lady is now dressed up in her finest black lingerie ready to spray the underside Neutral Grey. I was right, there was a lot of seam work needed after the first black primer but now we are ready to proceed. This model is certainly taking a lot of spraying!!!

A picture of the underside ready for paint. Sometimes, when spraying this one, I just have to accept that there will be overspray ‘escape’. Once finish I will go over everywhere with ipa to get rid of as much overspray as I can. The 1/32 Lancaster will seem small after this one.

Well this shot of the airframe in front of my spray booth is another illustration of its size. This is my first use of the large 15ml spray cup with the Colani. The usual larger spray cups I had, the standard size are 5ml. Two full cups and the top of the airframe has been sprayed. I...

I have been getting on with those sub-assemblies, weathering and detailing. With the engines I used steel effect Uschi Metal Powders. Having matted the black painted engine I rubbed the metal powder into the centre boss of the engine with a cotton bud to give it an oily steel look. I then...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

I had some back trouble so I was not at the bench for a week. However, the wings are on and seams sanded but my main progress has been on the remaining sub assemblies, engines, main landing gear and so on. There is still a fair bit of work to do on these, see the picture, when done I will be...

    1/32 Aircraft recommendations

Wow, that’s a big question. I have built well over 70 1/32 aircraft over the last 12 years or so. What is right for you very much depends on what you want. The 1/32 Tamiya Tomcat is an old kit that is not up to their later kits. I have not built it myself, choosing instead, the Trumpeter...

One final photo for today. Tops of wing are on….

Only now, having fitted the lower wing section, can the sheer size of this model be appreciated with its 42 inch wingspan. It will look bigger still once the elevators, ailerons and top wing are fitted. I will let the cement fully cure before fitting the rest of the wings sections. I have to...

I have made a start on the wings, constructing the wheel wells. Before gluing them into the lower wings I sprayed them with the new airbrush, plus the wheel well edges on the wing itself. The wheel wells are nicely detailed but I will have more work to do on them. Other wing parts waiting...

Harder & Steinbeck Colani Airbrush review.

First a bit of background. I have used several brands of airbrush over the years, a cheap Chinese knock-off, Harder & Steinbeck Evolution and Infinity, GSI Creos PS275, Topnotch and Iwata. Of all of them, I like the H&S brushes most due to their very easy breakdown and easy clean up. They...

I have put together the tail. Fit was good though with tight tolerances. It fits perfectly to the tail with a click. I cemented it into place but leaving the end unglued to provide a bit of spring when fitting the rear turret into place. I have started work on the wings, more on that...

I have finished the seams, at least for now. I will have to return to them when I have done the primer as there are bound to be flaws to treat. On to scribing. This is a skill that I do not claim to have mastered but it must be done. Below are the tools I utilise The main scribers are...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

This morning I went over her with a 400 grit sanding sponge. I was carefully checking for any ‘protuberances’ and eliminating them. Each time I now go over this the amount of material removed will be less, it will be 600 grade next. I then went over the seams looking for ‘dents’ or...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

Well I ended up using a mix of sprue goo and black ca wherever appropriate. The sprue goo was used in a few places where there was a visible gap. By using a thick sprue goo I was able to pack it into the gap. It is not a tidy process, a bit messy if fact , but it results in effectively...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

Another quick update. I am using a mix of superglue and cement to bring the fuselage sides together. I am working in sections using rubber bands as clamps don’t hold given the shape. The two sides are under tension given the amount that’s being closed off inside it. I will want to...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

Using cut down bombs and fuel tanks to hold ballast. I have fitted around 350grams of weight which, on top of the metal nose wheel leg, should be enough, once I have added another 30-40 grams in a void under the nose once the fuselage has been closed up. This compares to 300g recommend by HB...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

After lots of dry fitting and adjustment I have now been cementing the internal structure firmly into place. I am happy that the two fuselage sides will fit well together. There will be a fair bit of work on the long seams to do. I have been working in sections using clamps and have now...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

I cannot do more with the ballast until the internal structure is cemented firmly in place. So I move on to look at how the ball turret fits. First of all it is clear that I have to fit the ball turret before I close up the fuselage and also the pin that fixes the ball turret into the roof...

    The HobbyBoss 1/32 B24D Liberator.

Getting enough weight into the front is a definite challenge. I wanted as much of the weight as far forward as possible. I used two part Milliput to seal the front and end of a cavity on the starboard side, then I used Gator Grip to push in and around the dry Milliput to make sure there was...
