    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

A wet day here on Fraggle Rock but didn't dampen my eagerness to get in the garage and dabble!! To achieve a effect to simulate the sooty look behind the exhausts I thought I'd use a small torn off piece of sponge, dipped in a mix of Nato Black and Satin Black, most of the paint dabbed off the...

    Eureka moment!

You guys can correct me, buy looking at Tony's, (@yak face) Hurricane build It suddenly hit me. I was admiring the panel lines after he said he did a light wash. I was wondering why the effect wasn't so evident on my Sea King. Then - BANG. I think the penny dropped. Tony's lines were exactly...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

Thank you Brian, Paul and Steve. Appreciate the positive feedback. Steve, I don't as yet do pastels, something I will have to look into and acquire at some stage. I did some initial reading and there is lots out there and a great deal of choice. I may try and dry brush some black in a small area...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

Just spent ages layering dark, dull colour over the exhaust areas. I still think it needs a bit more dark near the exhaust itself!! What do you think? (Not even going to ask ‘E’, Eileen - SWMBO!!) Compare it with my photo of an actual King in post #269 if needed! Thanks guys. Getting there!!

    Money!

Spend money on my model!! Oooh, treasury approval required from the highest levels!!! Spend money on paint for the house - No Problems God help us we ever get a female chancellor!!! Although Money has been approved for upgrades to my man cave. Including paint to 'tart' it up AND - additional...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

During a very busy day I did manage to finish off the initial wash on the SK5. I also attached, (finally) the tail rotor. I decided to go into experimental mode and mixed up a concoction of paint to simulate oil streaking/contamination. Left over wash, a dash of Beetle orange, a drop of tyre...

The aircraft photo you took you like most!

OK, I'll play. I took this one of a high seas AS12 firing by my friend Kim. It was one of the last firings of a 'Warshot AS12'. Both his and my Wasp were being sent to the knackers yard in the sky. (Otherwise known as RNAY Wroughton). What I like about the image is I managed to capture the...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

Attacked the king today with a wash! Completed 75% and have mixed feelings over the result. Wash used was the Vallejo black wash. I settled on a method whereby I painted the wash over the rivet lines and general dividing lines, such as breaks in the airframe!! Then I washed over the whole area...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

Progress has been slow of late, well, backwards really I guess!! I put a matt varnish coat over the decals to seal it all in. Great I thought. Step nearing the finishing line!! THEN I read a wash needs to go over a 'gloss' coat!! (:unamused:!! Round spherical things!! :poop:). As it happens, I...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

Finished with all the decals! Repainted the exhaust bodge a darker shade, I'm happier with the result. It will be covered in exhaust detritus in a few days!! Managed to do a few more mic-tel leads today. Hopefully I'll be able to attach them with no hassle. Pic 1 Exhaust decal cover up = 3...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

Today's progress was slow and damaging!!! (Minor damage). The first thing I tried today was fit the decal aft of the port exhaust. The problem is that there is a bulge the decal has to blend around. The main problem is the decal isn't flexible to work itself around the bulge. As I said, 'tried'...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

A small anecdote. Whilst on 706 NAS at Culdrose carrying out operational flying training. The Sea King has a piece of kit on board to aid salvage, 'sonic locator beacon'. To indicate the aircraft has it fitted a Large 'B' is painted on the port side under the roundel. On all naval squadrons we...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

An hour in the garage today produced this lot. (More decals). Pic 1 Port side today. Pic 2 There are few more tiny decals in place that are very small and red so don't show too well. That was it for today. I have a dilemma coming up in the form of two large decals that fit aft of the...

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

Didn't have it on the Mk2/5/6. ASW Kings Rick. We had handles in the top left and right corners of the cabin door. As per my screen shot below. The handles you show were fitted to the HAR versions. Probably 771 cabs. Never flew in them so can't swear!!

    Doug's 1/48 Airfix Sea King

OK, I was back to the bench today. Real slow and a mug of nice tea at hand. Decals!! Well I bit the bullet, made the decision to mix a few decals up to achieve a hybrid 819 Sea King. I used the white decals in place of the black but needs must. (I'm sure I'll make another Sea King one day. Then...

Not the day it should have been!!!

Should have made it back to the bench today to recommence the decals on the Sea King. The kitchen painting was finished and all I had to do was replace the bibs and bobs back to their respective places on walls. A few unit doors replaced and the glass kitchen hood put back. THAT was the plan...

    Latest Acquisitions (2024)

Arrived today. The Helix has dropped down the list. This is the next build after the 'King' is finished. Pic 1 The box art. Ugly - yes. But functional and what a blast. It operated from small ships for nearly all my service career. (25 years). Great to work on, even more fun to fly. One...
