Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

Detail painting done, note that I painted the red no walk lines. I always do this as it’s far easier and effecting than the decals. That said Zoukei Mura decals are excellent so I decided to use them instead of painting the main markings. First of all I applied a gloss coat. Because I...

Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

I have been getting on with the painting. Still got some more detail painting to do before applying decals. Here is where I am at. Almost every build of the Raiden I have seen has been with the lightning bolts on the side. I have decided to be different and do a different aircraft without...

Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

I have now applied a black primer. Seams look generally good from a cursory look. I will examine them in more detail alter. When any issues are resolved I will run a polishing stick over the model before starting the painting.

The airframe is ready for painting. I just need to do some masking. I had some issues attaching the engine panels, not due to poor fit, the fit was perfect. The problem is that something was not lined up perfectly which then had a knock on effect. This is a key point about how these kits...

Tail and tail wheel construction, on. More engine build up ahead of adding the panels. Another quick look at the cockpit

I have fitted the other side and once again a perfect fit. As was the fillet on the other side. When these have dried I will fit the other fillet.

Gradually pulling together the fuselage/wings. The instructions say fit the right side of the fuselage to the cockpit then that to the wings before adding the left side. I can see why, because it gives you access to cement in place and check it’s in the right position. I have added the...

Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

Much to my surprise I had a fit issue with the wing ribs associated with the guns. Up to then the fit was perfect. I spent ages checking them against the instructions, including the photos and really could not work out why. The only part already fitted into the wing was the spar, I checked...

Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

I have been building up the cockpit. It all goes together well and I am painting as I go. No detailing sets here, just the old fashioned hairy stick. Even the seatbelts are moulded in and paint up well. I will have some weathering to do here, a semi-gloss coat, washes, semi-matt coat, dry...

Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

I have been working on the engine block for a few hours. Imps in red her black and then dry brushed with Uschi metal powders. That’s much more effective than painting it metallic black as per instructions.

I managed some bench time unexpectedly. Look at the first stage in the instructions, how ZM take care to show you how the engine block goes together. The different views, the photo. You cannot go wrong. Now look at this. Some people criticise ZM for moulding in the cylinder internals all...

Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

The Raiden was a late war high altitude point defence interceptor, code named ‘Jack’. It was used to combat the B29s and was the fastest aircraft the Japanese Navy had. The box My workbench all cleaned up and ready with the kit sprues labelled for easy selection. A couple of pictures of...

    Tamiya 1/48 F14A Tomcat

Yet another superb kit from Tamiya , a joy to build from start to finish. That’s the last of my 1/48 builds and this string of builds have ended on a high note with the best four kits left to last. Now, back to 1/32 and WW2 subjects!

Tamiya 1/48 McDonnell Douglas F4B Phantom II

How often have we said that ‘no kit is perfect’ or ‘all kits have issues’, well this is about as perfect a kit without issues that I have ever found. The design and engineering of this kit hits new levels of excellence. I used to think that the 1/32 Tamiya Mosquito was the closest you could...

    Small clear parts…

I think that has happened to all of us. You have this small round or tear drop clear piece representing a light, it pings out of your tweezers never to be found again…. What do you do? Get out the Micro Kristal Klear. Apply a drop, with a cocktail stick, to where the light goes, leave it a...

    1/48 Airfix Blackburn Buccaneer

I was brought up with Airfix but rarely build them now as they do not make 1/32 scale aircraft. The few 1/48 and 1/24 Airfix kits I have built have not exactly been my best build experiences. That said I am so pleased now to give a completely unreserved recommendation for an Airfix kit. If...

    Hobby Zone Tilting 3-Drawer Module

I have a three stack HZ set-up, a total of 23 units of various types and all of them went together perfectly. I love these units and the flexible modular design.

    AMK 1/48 MiG 31 Foxhound.

This is a great kit, without a doubt the best fitting 1/48 kit I have built. Thoroughly enjoyable to build right up until ‘final fittings’. If you have or get this kit make sure that you get a brass undercarriage set, do not attempt to build this without one. The kit’s u/c is very complex to...

    Airbrush spray booth

Jim, mine vents outside, a BV300S-D and has both a carbon and particulate filter.

    Airbrush spray booth

Actually no Tim. There is a label on top of my units that says 6 months for the carbon filter regardless of usage. They also recommend to replace the particulate filter 6 times a year. See below.
