    New member just starting back

Hi Steve Welcome to SMF. Full of friendly fruitcakes, all the help, advice and (importantly) encouragement you could possibly need. I am a relative ’newbie’ to the forum and this is the first time I have had the nerve to offer help/opinions but as a starter project take look at the Meng ‘Toon’...

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

The technicalities of how the walrus is winched aboard are pure guesswork on my part (apart from the AOTS reference included earlier). Just looks ’about right’ IMHO. Likewise the figures, no matter how much I attempted to make the positions and poses look random, they don’t. couldn’t get the...

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

FINITO!!!!!!!! At last. Just a coat of satin varnish on the sea (I think gloss is too shiny, it reflects too much and distracts the eye from the model even though it probably best represents ‘wetness’).

Black Cat 3D printing, awesome. The other end of the scale

    West Yorks in Burma

From the sublime to the ridiculous, moving back onto the crew for Warspite while the filler dries out on my Bren Gunner.

    West Yorks in Burma

Hi this is a bit out of my comfort zone, usually stick to 1/350 and 1/700 naval. My late pop served with the 2nd West Yorks in Burma. He never spoke about it much when we were kids, which I later learned was the way of things with most who served out there. He suffered late in life from dementia...

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

Walrus and motor launch ‘crewed up’. My hands and brain are now jelly!!!!!!! Don’t know whether I have the skill/patience/perseverance to do enough crew for the ship itself!! Am now moving back onto the sea base coz it seems to be ‘drinking’ Liquitex. Hopefully one last application will fill all...

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

She’s in the water! Just done an initial fill of any gaps with Liquitex, will let that dry out and see what extra work is needed. There are a couple of ‘spare’ ships boats so I might fill the void on her Starboard bow with some extra interest. Can’t imagine she would be winching the aircraft...

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

Right. That’s all of the rigging I am prepared to mess about with, especially as I can’t seem to find 2 references that are the same!!!! She is now going into the base permanently so that I can finish the sea and look at how I deal with the crane and Walrus. Just some weathering work on ships...

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

Gently snapped this one off with tweezers, don’t think that will work where there are more than the two location points.

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

Yup, I am using the VMS ‘XT Thin’ And using my home made applicator - an old darning needle (blunted) mounted in a piec of sprue.

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

Don’t know how clearly this pic shows the ‘Heath Robinson’ blobs of blue tack holding the various rigging threads out of the way. no way you can let these strands lie loose, they just attract each other and turn into ‘thread spagetti’.

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

HELP PLEASE these just arrived from Black Cat, (1/350 figures for my Warspite), they look sooooo small and fragile. How do I get these off the fret without breaking them? Anyone had previous experience? How do I paint them!!!!!? Might have bitten off more than I can chew here!

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

Smothered the base with liquitex. Toooooo shiny, will use a satin varnish to see what that looks like. Some work on the ‘Walrus’ too.

Missed a yard arm off!!!!!!! Really should look at the instructions!!!!!!

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

First coats on the base and another check fit. Think I might darken the sea colour a bit more. Looks too much like a ‘holiday brochure’ sea doesn’t look quite that BLUE on the model, will see how it looks after I have smothered it in liquitex

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

This is the piccy from AOTS that I am thinking of trying to recreate._not sure how that will go!

HMS Warspite back on the workbench

More work on weathering and adding lots of small parts, also this is the first journey for the ‘Grand Old Lady’ from the work bench to her base setting. this is just to check fit and see how much more I will have to build up the sea level.
