Well, I've had a busy weekend!

Nashorn Restoration project seeks funds after disastrous fire

Dear all, I would not normally pass on a shout-out for donations, but this one seems particularly deserving... This team of Dutch enthusiasts have been patiently restoring a Nashorn from the ground up - then it caught fire. Fortunately, the majority of the beast survives. Anyway, as with most...

    Liberation, Italy 1944

Anyway, we are motoring on now. None of the figures are permanently in place, but I am pleased with the arrangement so far. As I suspected, the rather sombre infantryman in the foreground helps to lead the eye into the scene...

    Liberation, Italy 1944

No, you're both quite right. And in real life he would almost certainly have conspicuously rifled pockets. But that would have taken a lot more work! I will have some papers and other bits and pieces strewn about, some spent shell casings and probably an abandoned Kar 98K. Meanwhile, here we...

    Liberation, Italy 1944

Thanks Rick! More work on the figures... The priest (not quite finished - certainly needs a coat of matt varnish) is looking suitably heavenward. Is he giving thanks for his liberation - or asking some tough questions? You decide. He's my favourite Mark35 figure. And adding to the...

    Liberation, Italy 1944

More progress over the weekend... The street is looking a little less 'touristy' now that some rubble is in place... And I am starting to experiment with placement of some of the figures.

    Liberation, Italy 1944

Thanks folks... (and steady on Mini Me!) The Partisan now has his tricolour armband, Sten and spare magazine painted. As with all my figures (and pretty much anything else apart from vehicles) I finished him off with a wash of Citadel Agrax Earthshade.

A couple more of the figures as work in progress. These are the Italians: a bella donna on the balcony and a Partisan. She still needs some work on her dress and he still has his Sten and tricolour armband to be painted. Both are modified figures from the wonderful French Mk.35 range.

    Liberation, Italy 1944

Thanks Gentlemen... very kind. Anyway...I will get back to the landscape very soon, but first I have to get a move on with my figures. This is the pair who will be seen walking off the left-hand side of the diorama. As discussed above, they are a modified from a set by Corsar Rex. Both heads...

    Liberation, Italy 1944

Thanks for all your kind words... I've been doing bits and pieces all over the place in recent weeks. Here is a shot which shows progress so far - it should make a good companion to the image at the top of this post. Only the Topolino is permanently fixed in place at this stage. Also the...

    Liberation, Italy 1944

Well, despite my 'army' of figures on display in my last post, I decided that one more was needed. Since my two German vehicles were abandoned, it seemed a shame not to have any figures in the Carrier. Figures in vehicles help to give a sense of purpose and scale. Plus, someone pointed out to...

    Liberation, Italy 1944

The cast assemble... Here are my figures assembled. It's all looking a bit ghoulish with the sombre colour palette and some of them with detached hands and heads. So far they have received a dark base coat, a basic highlight and a basic flesh tone and highlight - all applied with the airbrush.

    Liberation, Italy 1944

Thanks gents. After a couple of weeks busy elsewhere I have managed to get back to Italy, 1944. First of all the sunflowers have spread - a little like Triffids! I wasn't happy with the colour of the leaves which, despite airbrushing them with various shades of green, still looked too...

Interesting colour image from the Italian Campaign - but what is the AFV?

Every now and then I come across interesting images from the Second World War. It's especially exciting when they're in colour. https://www.history.com/topics/world-war-ii/italian-campaign This atmospheric shot of three young German lads - apparently walking after capture - appears on the...

Figures for my WWII diorama 'Liberation, Italy 1944'

This blog is for figures destined to be part of my WWII diorama 'Liberation, Italy 1944'. See the blog at: http://www.scale-models.co.uk/threads/liberation-italy-1944.30350/ The setting is north of Rome in the latter half of 1944 and the figures are to be a mixture of 'liberating' Allied...

Help wanted with markings for Mk.II Universal Carrier in Italy

Hello all, I am hoping that the combined brain power of this site can help where mine is clearly lacking... As some may have seen, I am building a diorama (1/35) set in Italy in late 1944. The setting is a village 'somewhere north of Rome' (although the Allies had moved quite a way north since...

    Fiat Topolino in German Service

This vehicle is destined to be part of my WWII diorama 'Liberation, Italy 1944'. See the blog at: http://www.scale-models.co.uk/threads/liberation-italy-1944.30350/ The original idea was to have some sort of small German vehicle crashed into the ravine in front of the bridge - as if it failed...

Stug III Ausf G in Italy 1944

The well-known photo above shows Fusilier F Jefferson of C Company, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers in front of the Stug III which he knocked out with a Piat in Italy, 16 May 1944 near Monte Cassino. As a result of his action he won the Victoria Cross. This vehicle is destined to be part of my WWII...

Universal Carrier Mark II in Italy by Riich Models

This vehicle is destined to be part of my WWII diorama 'Liberation, Italy 1944'. See the blog at: http://www.scale-models.co.uk/threads/liberation-italy-1944.30350/ The last time I built a Universal (or Bren) Carrier was the old Tamiya kit back in the 80s. While it certainly has a lot to...
