    3D printer

Stephen, there have been many discussions on this subject on this forum over the last few years, to which I have always contributed. I used 3D-printing professionally for over 20 years before it became affordable to us hobbyists. I recommend a look at those discussions before you spend any...

Not a Moment to Lose… Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes, December 1944

OMG Tim that's totally fantastic! The amount of detail you've crammed into it is off the chart. You could have got away with leaving the shed door closed but no, you decided to FILL it with STUFF! I'm in awe, sir.

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Thanks everyone, as always, for being interested enough to comment. It’s good to know this is not happening in a vacuum. I’m pleased to announce that GI number 2 of the 3rd batch is painted, hurrah! Here he is in my temporary 3D-printed base, but I can’t wait to see what they look like on the...

    3D printer

If you're interested I used a lot of 3D printed pieces, both FDM and resin, in my D-Day Diorama(still ongoing) https://www.scalemodelling.co.uk/threads/neils-1-35-liberty-ship-diorama.1234498/page-11#post-1276074

I use the Elegoo Mars 2 , which I bought in 2022 and I'm still very happy with it. There are several newer versions by now and it also has a big brother called Saturn, so depending on how big the models are that you want to print, you could do a lot worse.

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Well thanks everyone for the positive feedback, it really does help. I'm sorry for the long delay ,but it wasn’t only decorating and Christmas that got in the way; I needed a break from all the khaki so I went a bit Napoleonic for a while, but I'm back on track (for now...). So Figure 2 of this...

Historex 54mm Grenadiers Hollandaise de la Garde, Chapeau Chinois player

Thanks everyone for the interest and comments. I’ve finished this boy now and I’ve learned a lot about making a Historex model in the process- which was precisely the point of the exercise. I chose to build a relatively simple subject in order to find and avoid some pitfalls when I get into the...

RDG Miniatures Marine de la Garde Drummer 54mm

Well I’ve finally finished this boy , and though I shouldn’t say it myself, I think I have excelled myself. It’s far and away the most challenging figure I've ever attempted to paint, but I'm glad I did it because although it’s nowhere near the fantastic standards of the experts we see...

RDG Miniatures Marine de la Garde Drummer 54mm

The Darkstar paints arrived on Friday and I am happy to say it wasn’t just a case of ‘a bad workman blaming his tools’, and now I’m a willing convert. I always knew there were better metallics than the Vallejo I was using but up to now I haven’t felt the need to splash the cash. But this is one...

Historex 54mm Grenadiers Hollandaise de la Garde, Chapeau Chinois player

Time to look at the actual Chapeau Chinois. For a start it was a bugger just to clean off the mould lines. With a bit more time at my disposal I would probably replace the whole shaft with a brass one and done a bit of miniature ‘turning’ , but life’s too short so I contented myself with just...

RDG Miniatures Marine de la Garde Drummer 54mm

Well here is my attempt at the diagonal red lines on the lace and it was not easy. I have retouched the blue as well. This is really at the limits of my capabilities, but I’m still optimistic, so I decided to have another try. But after overpainting all the braid and then underpainting...

RDG Miniatures Marine de la Garde Drummer 54mm

I’ve started on the torso. The blue is more or less there, although whether the shade is correct is anybody’s guess. It seems to me that there are as many variations on the shade of blue as there are illustrations, so I went with what I have already. Boy have I given myself a challenge with the...

Historex 54mm Grenadiers Hollandaise de la Garde, Chapeau Chinois player

I am still a little bit khaki’d out at the moment, and I’ve been promising myself for AGES that I would make a start on my collection of Historex figures. I really don’t want to lose momentum with the GIs but the temptation has been too great and so I have decided to go for some COLOUR , in the...

RDG Miniatures Marine de la Garde Drummer 54mm

As most people know by now, I generally only convert stock figures into something else, or even sculpt them myself. This means I very rarely buy a figure just because I like it and want to paint it. Well this is one of those rare figures, and, flushed with my recent painting success, I have...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Many thanks Jim and Paul Well, I made it! GI no 1 is painted, and I’m a lot happier with the result. I think I will just have to stick with doing them one at a time from now on. I was chatting to my daughter, who is a painter of portraits, about flesh colours and she suggested underpainting in...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Thanks everyone for the positive comments and encouragement. GI no1 of this batch is ready for paint. The torso I used didn’t have the life-preserver so I made one from lead foil and a 3D-printed nozzle. I have made several before as litter in the Landing Craft but this is the first time I...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Cheers Jim. I’m pleased to report that the paint has yet to be chosen for the decorating so I have been able to get to the bench and make a start on the third batch of disembarking GI’s. So here they all are in their ’Frankenstein’ state on my 3D-printed base mock-up ,which saves me from...

    Neil's 1-35 Liberty Ship Diorama

Finally! Painting the remaining four Gis of this second batch has been a real struggle, mostly because it’s been spaced over almost three months, with an hour snatched here and there , in between major house decorating (sanding floorboards as well as paint and wallpaper)and a holiday, and then...

    90mm Skinner's Horse Captain

He’s DONE! I never really expected this to happen because of my historic fear of painting, but there it is. It was more enjoyable than I expected it to be and it took longer than I expected, but that might be because of the real life distractions I have at the moment. And it was more...

    Latest Acquisitions (2025)

I don't usually post on this thread, but I feel a shout out is due to Richard48 , the very nice chap who sent me all of this booty as a thankyou for some 3D printing I did for his Phantoms project it's WAY out of proportion for the work I did, but I'm very grateful, and you will certainly some...
