    Clean-up after SMS paints

Hi guys, Just doing some spoon testing and going to try the SMS paints I've had for a bit. In particular PL15 (Red Oxide) Just wondering what folks use to clean down the AB after use. I've got MLT and Tamiya lacquer thinners - would prefer not to have another proprietary one if (say) MLT will...

    Masking cockpit techniques

Have you tried Bare Metal Foil? I used it on this Spitfire canopy: Just keep a real sharp blade in your knife and clean the adhesive off with IPA.

    LEDs for enhancing models

Been looking at both Boatman's Super Tomcat F14D and Brian's 1:48 Dkm u-Boat. When finished having a good feast at the images, I was wondering about the LEDs. I sourced some from Farnell for my lifeboat because I wanted low current ones (2mA instead of the usual 20mA). Problem is, they are...

    Modelling with non-modelling tools ...

Another one to add to the list... This is my patented ping preventer (specially designed to defeat the carpet monster). In reality it was the bag that my new pillow came in :smiling5: Open the zip wide to put stuff in then close up as far as you want, leaving a comfortable gap to get your hands...

    Modelling with non-modelling tools ...

I use a travel toothbrush that I got on a business flight to "scrub" the sprues during the washing phase prior to starting a model. This one is dedicated to modelling and never goes near my teeth :smiling5:

    Techniques for applying long decals

Gents, I am referring to those loooong water-slide decals we get on wingy things. For example, on the Revell 1:72 Atlas on the top of the wings as demarcation lines or the on the side of a BA Concorde. I seem to be a complete bungler when it comes to those. Have any of you more experienced...

    Quality of Heller kits?

I see that Heller are bringing out a 1:48 Jaguar soon. I've no experience with their kits. Has anyone built one of their recent kits and can give an opinion on quality/fit/etc.? Thanks chaps. John

A heads-up on model paint stripping

A useful trick for getting all the paint off a model is to dunk it in a 50:50 mix of Dettol/Water overnight. Reckitt have re-formulated Dettol and based it on lactic acid, branding it now as "Dettol True". The original recipe containing 4.8% Chloroxylenol no longer features on the Dettol...

Roden 1:144 Boeing RC-135V/W Rivet Joint - Inbox Review

Well, I just could not figure out how to edit, so I have re-posted with full-sized images. I also discovered how to re-orientate them to make it a bit more readable... Box: Thin-gauge, top-opening 370mm x 240mm x 46mm with artist's depiction of aircraft. No declaration of finished model size...

Roden 1:144 Boeing RC-135V/W Rivet Joint - Inbox Review

Just received the Roden 1:144 Boeing RC-135V/W Rivet Joint (Kit No.349) and was prompted by Dave Ward to leave a review. Here goes... Box: Thin-gauge, top-opening 370mm x 240mm x 46mm with artist's depiction of aircraft. No declaration of finished model size, but can be calculated from the...

    Buccaneer Brevity

I was tackling the build of the Airfix 1:72 Buccaneer S2C and, at the end, removed the masking from the canopy.... My sense of humour has recovered now. And, yes, I did get it out! Hopefully it will raise your endorphine levels. John

    Roden 1:144 Rivet Joint kit

Hi all, I have just acquired the Roden 1:144 Rivet Joint kit and thought I would include a couple of pics for any prospective buyers. The first one is to to with the wings. The trailing edge of all 4 wing roots are deformed and will need a bit of TLC... The second is to do with the...

    VMS Acrylic Varnishes

Historically, I have suffered with using Humbrol Acrylic varnishes being tacky for ages. I am an enamel user so I have been told that, post painting, I need to use an acrylic varnish to protect the paint and that this will not be attacked by enamel thinners when rubbing excess wash off. So, I...

    Simon's Sikorsky CH53 GS/G Revell 1/48

Simon, I haven't started mine yet, so the decal sheet is intact: The good news is "you are not losing it :smiling3:" There are only 6 of each (in the bottom LH corner), each being 30mm long. I have measured the blade width and it is 15mm. So, assuming that the decal is meant to wrap around both...

    AB spraying into internal corners

Hello all. I have trawled through all of the posts in the Airbrush section and could not find a solution to the following. I'd appreciate any pointers from those who have overcome it. Another one of my current builds is the Revell 1:72 F-117A Nighthawk. On the underside are 3 closed recesses...

Trying to get paint onto an Atlas

Hello to all the more experienced sprayers. I am currently building the Revell 1:72 A400M Atlas and I am experiencing airbrushing issues (big time). I have had little problem with smaller parts and smaller kits but this is my first large kit and I don't know if some of that is related to it. I...

Cleaning masking fluid from paint brushes.

Admittedly, the 1:72 Harrier is only a small kit but I used a cocktail stick to apply Maskol to cover the grey in readiness for the green. Load the stick and apply using the side of the stick rather than the point. Regards, John

    It just won't wash

Hi all, I have a puzzle (as normal)... I am currently building the Revell A400M Atlas. As usual, did the inside bits first. Inside, at the end of the loading floor, there is a bulkhead with detail including doors. I painted this up using Humbrol enamels and glossed it with Humbrol Clear Gloss...

Primer variability or just the user?

To date, I have used the Alclad II Primer/Microfiller products (white, grey and black). I have a H&S Evolution CR Plus airbrush and have been applying the white and grey at 15psi (normally using the 0.2mm needle) I tried to spray the black with the same settings - nothing I then cranked the...

    Intro images

This post is merely by way of introduction to other users on the site, and specifically at the request of adt70hk. One is of the Dominie T.1 by Airfix. I came across a paint scheme different to that in the kit (different nose) and opted for that. Otherwise it is a straight kit build. No AM...
