Well , here he is, my first painted figure in nearly 40 years!
I was pretty much starting from scratch with acrylics, so that made it interesting as well.
I've done my Dutch-Belgian Artillery man in the meantime and so I'm slightly more comfortable with them, but there's still lots to learn.
He's now got a sling to his rifle made from lead foil and a couple of PE buckles.( I've just noticed from the pics that it has become detached, DOH!)
And a bit of a dust and modulation with some pastels.

I never even considered oils- possibly because in this specific instance I had bought the themed set from Tommy's War and I wanted to get used to them before letting myself loose on a nice Tommy's war sculpt.
I used to use them back in the day for horses because of the sheen, but never for figures. With acrylics, if you decide English Uniform is the right colour, you can go straight to the bottle and get it right without thinking about it. I assume with oils you have to use the traditional artists' colours like vandyke brown, prussian blue, alizarin crimson etc .Of course things have moved on considerably since then, but what puts me off is the idea of having to mix a specific colour every time.I'm very lazy like that, I don't enjoy mixing colours- I like to put my effort into other things.
Or have things changed now?Is there a range of oils specifically for figure painters that has field grey, horizon bleu, khaki, etc?

I wish I could take credit for the look of the face but that's just how it came out and I was relieved that I hadn't screwed it up:anguished::smiling6:
I think that's something to aspire to, though
