Here is a pic or 2 of the Italeri T 6 harvard or "spammy" as was known in the SAAF.

Fit of the parts are not to bad, some minor filling needed.

Cockpit detail rather good I think.I added the pilot dressed in an orange flight suite as the SAAF pupill pilots were,added harnasses and the mic wire to the helmet.

To get the fading of the daglo orrange on the plane just right will be "interesting" to say the least.

Fortunately there are a few ex SAAF spammies where I work, so getting the detail is eazy.

That cockpit looks very nice. Nice job on the flight suit. Will all the plane be daglo orange? Will be an interesting colour scheme.

Thanx.no the cowl is daglo with grey anti glare pannel, the tail less controll surfaces (they are silver dope), the wing leading edges,midsection on wings and wingtips are orange.The section on the wing between the orange on top is extra dark sea grey, bottom in silver.

The fuselarge is also silver.

Will try to get a larger view pic tomorrow, I only have colse up detail pix now.

A tecnique I tried on the cowl, that works OK is to first paint it yellow with the orange over that. When dry I LIGHTLY snad the faded areas with wes 2000 paper to thin out the orange and bring the yellow tint out.

Most spammies here look like that in the African sun.

Lukly there is a shop nearby that make custum decals for the SAAF planes, so I will be using them.

Nice pic Steve.

I assume that he did his training throught the RAF training scheeme in the UK or Canada then?

I know that many UK RAF air crew did their training here in SA during the "big one"

He was Fleet Air Arm (RN). That picture was taken in 1952 at Kingsville,Texas. He moved to Pensacola,Florida, where he finished his training with deck landings on USS Monterey. I'm not sure why he trained in the USA, I never thought to ask him. Most of his american colleagues went on to further training for jets whereas he returned to the UK and flew Sea Furies for a couple of years.He converted to the then new fangled helicopters in 1955. He died at only 54 in 1984 after a post navy business career in West Africa. My brother and I have been sorting a lot of photographs recently,it's quite a challenge matching pictures and places! I have his log books and at least one reliable surviving "witness" in my Aunt.

WOW sea furies, must have been wild.

I joined the fuseelarge halves and some flilling will be required on some pannels.The fit between the wing and fuse was not realy all that good and there is going to be a difficult place to try and fill as I cant get into the corner to sand it.So I might have to use some form of liquid fill tecnique.

Most of the airframe complete, filled sanded ect,now just to rescribe the lost pannellines.

Here is the question.

I have humbrol grey primer,do you guys prime or not before final collours go on?why?

The T 6 has 3 different paches of collour and each one will be masked off.I am a little worried that with all the paint and primed aswell that some surface detail might get lost and filled with the paint.(airbrushed)

Sugestions???

hi theuns,personally i usually always prime as i find it helps show up any areas that still need attention such as filled joints etc,also i think the final coat of colour adheres better on a primed surface rather than the unpainted plastic. To try and minimise the loss of detail i only give the model a very light coat of primer,it usually seems to turn out ok for me. looking forward to seeing the "spammie" cheers tony

I will try the light primer thing.

Here is a pic or 2 of what I got so far.

You cant see it but I droped the flaps to 23 deg - takeoff setting.

All me pix of SAAF trainers show pupes wearing white helmets, not green as I did first.

The engine is complete enough for my skill level.

The fillet between the rear fuse and horizontal stab will not be filled more than it is now, my pix of full size T6 show a defenate "step" where the fairing attaches to the stab.It is not an easy place to try and sand, so I used wood glue as a filler instead of putty filler, hope it works.

Well, atleast I got to painting it, need some anit glare pannels and custom decals.

PS. those dayglow orrange bands are"painfully" orrange!

I am rather pived off lately!

I have ordered my decals and they were posted 18 jan but still have not arrived!! Talk about snail mail.

So for now I am stuck with the T-6 project untill they one day rock up :-(

I would have got another set but at arround pounds it hurts.

Maybe I should start on the ICM P-51 solong :-)

Well here is what it looks like now,waiting for decals.

The rudder is also plain silver and the cowl orrange.I desided against the fading of the dayglow as I think it takes away the "strikingness" of the collours.

Some exhaust stains will be added to the starbord wing root after clearcoating.

On some of the SAAF's T-6 the top ailerons would be grey aswell, but the silver looks nicer I think.
