discussion 1/72 scale.....Scratch building the Hospital, Rorke's Drift, circa 23rd January 1879.

At the wife's suggestion, I'm going to build the Hospital at Rorke's Drift.

It will be in 1/72 scale and made from foam board, plastic card, string and coffee stirrers. (Can't find polystyrene pizza bases anymore!:sad-face

I always keep my paper templates for any model buildings I design. When I built the original Rorke's Drift model I made template for the Storehouse, but to be honest I'd forgotten I made a pattern for the hospital at the same time. Then decided not to build it.

So yesterday I found it....:thumb2:

Lousy weather outside, so here is this morning's work. After marking around the templates, I cut the parts of the building cut out of the board with my scalpel. Various doors and windows were then marked out.

Folks have different approaches to modelling buildings and walls. I prefer not to add a separate layer of filler 'Texture' because I find it easier and simpler to add the effect directly to the board using tools and sandpaper etc. I find this method also makes painting and weathering relatively straight forward - Sez he!

Next I will scribe the brick and stone work, cut out the openings and glue it all together.

as i remember Hook was nothing like the movie version......teetotal and perfect soldier......his descendants wernt happy with the movie

Hi Ron - check out Sainsbury own brand DIY pizza bases, 2 to a pack separated by a styrofoam circle :thumb2::smiling2:

Smooth one side, bit bobbly the other but may have potential - I have a few that I've saved. Not used any yet

An Update.
I've started to scribe the front of the building. I used my knife and a steel rule - Never use plastic as a straight edge when using a scalpel - Oh, yes you have!

Here's the stages. I always use cheap paints for larger applications such as this.

Today I've applied a first wash to highlight the mortar joints.

A bit of clay colour added. Then I realised I'd made a mistake with this piece. This part is stepped back to form the back wall of the verandah and should have been higher than I made it to fit up under the pitch of the roof so....

Like the work , can we have a ruler next to it please so I can see the scale as it must be very fine indeed.

Thanks for your post Rick. I was beginning to think my mates had all gone Christmas shopping!

I've scribed all the remaining brickwork and made sure the bond runs true right around the pieces.
