Right i'm going to do this as a filler before i start back on my M*A*S*H dio.

Main reason is i've just been on a course of steroids and due to side-effects my eyesight and hand trembles are too bad to paint figure faces etc ....

I'm going to stick it in a little dio depicting a run-down neglected motor left to rot in a junkyard ... mainly due to the fact that it only cost 99p and i nicked the alloys for the ferrari gto i just finished.

kind offer Andy but I have the wheels sussed, bit of improvisation and they'll be sort of stacked around with a rimless tyre here or there.

I've found that trying to put a model together so it looks like its falling apart is a little harder than it may first appear.

Started to put bits together, trying to get the appearance of exposure to the elements for the last few years.

Engines had a few pipes and HT leads that have been pulled out etc, detailing done on clocks, Radiator has pipes attached but will be out of the car somewhere in the dio.

Still got lots of dust, muck and damp staining to do when its fully together before the lid goes on.

Made the base, and this is the start of the groundwork. Fence is balsa, corrugated iron is tin foil, floor covering is sweepings up from when we refurbished the kitchen, the mound is plasticene covered in sweepings (advantage with plasticene is you can still shape it a good amount when it's in situ), oil stains are just a heavy gloss black wash, grass is "static grass" for railways.

Thank for the positives chaps .

Andy .... the fence is fairly easy, cutting the bits ready is the long part.

The main posts are 8cm long ...8x8mm square (this gives (ish) a 6ft post that looks about right at this scale

)

the horizontal planks are 8cm x 3x3mm

the slats are 7.5cm long, 7-10mm wide (to give variation) and are about 1mm thick.

Lay two horizontal bits perpendicular to each other about 2inch apart and then superglue the thinner slats on the top from one end to the other, leave random gaps and breaking a few to give a look of age and wear.

when you have as many panels as you need just superglue these to the main posts again with a bit of irregularity to give a natural look. just add bits of spare wood the simulate repairs etc.

The steel is some tin foil thats been grooved using a tool i made (it's a bit of flat balsa 3x4 inch thats got cocktail sticks glued to the surface side by side (small gap between). just lay the foil on these and then run a blunt tool over the foil down the grooves to make the corrugated effect)

Paint slats with a light brown and posts with a slightly darker brown. paint metal with a grey of your choice.

when dry use a black wash all over the wood, soak up random areas with some tissue as it gives a patchy appearence.

the metal has a black wash with a hint of silver paint in the mix.

Well, as it was just basically weathering and rusting up, i didn't take any interim pictures .... i just got on and completed it to a state that equaled some pictures of junkyards i used for reference from t'interweb.

it was a bit of a fun build, no fit problems cos it didn't matter really, to be honest i enjoyed bulding the base the most.

First off Colin, I hope you're o.k. now, and everything has settled down.....

This mini diorama is superb and just one week to do it. Full credit to you.

As usual you have a knack of cramming so much good stuff in a small space, yet it's never overdone. A really nice piece of work.

Big 5* for sure.

Ian ... you dont know how tempted i was to do the hammer and rusty paint technique

Ron ... yep feeling much better, steroids have an issue with me it seems, won't be bothering with them again if i have any say in it i'll tell ya.

The sweepings up technique is so simple, just seive it to the scale you need and "le voila" as you well know yourself (where do you think i got the idea from

)

and as far as cramming stuff in .... i'm back on the M*A*S*H jobbie and have a load of figures finished today, gonna get a few in situ over the week end and then get back into it full swing.

i work in a builders merchant and i just brush up and down the brick aisle when its dry and i get about three hundredweight of very authentic looking rubble with loads of different colours depending on which bricks i am brushing by. think i might start bagging and selling on e-bay.
