Just heard on the news that the PM's visit to Burma has uncovered 20 Spitfires which were hidden underground during WWII.

I'm sure he didn't dig them out himself, way below his paygrade, but apparently they are going to be "released", whatever that means?

Hopefully their in reasonable condition and maybe get sent back here??

Atb, Colin.

Cool! I hope they get them out and they are not rotted away. That is some find!

I'm sure it wasn't like this but can you imagine finding an old rusty door, opening it and entering into a dusty underground hanger and discovering 20 Spits!!

I can imagine it was a bit like those guys that bought an old farm in central Europe some place. Dirt cheap any way. When they got time to have a good look round they opened up one of the barns and it was stuffed full of old classic cars!!!

I think if I opened an old door and found 20 Spitfires I would soil my shorts, to put it as politly as possible.

Like the guy in Lincolnshire about 20 years ago who bought some old abandoned buildings and land from the MOD. When he opened the building he found 10 (ten) dusty cloth covered wooden crates each containing a brand new Merlin engine. Apparently RR bought them back from him. I would be like a kid in a sweetie shop if that happened lol. Keep one for myself just to start it up and listen to the beautiful roar :)

What scale are they? No interest if they are less than 1/48.

its the stuff dreams are made of. This might be a good subject for the Diorama specialists on the forum

It's good that one of these stories proves to be true.

There are oft repeated stories of stashes of Spitfires, particularly in Australia.

I still think there are a load of Hurricanes hidden somewhere in Russia. Now that would be a proper find!

can you imagine if these 20 spitfires are fully functional an pristine what a real national treasure this is. do you think they will end up in the hands of private owners?

From reports it seems that they were buried well protected for future use.

Parts greased & wrapped in greased covering. Joints were tarred. The wings removed & buried alongside & all protected in a greased covering.

If all goes well this would be probably the greatest find of all time in aviation terms. Does any body know the Mk. of these craft ? As they would probably keep the most upto date for the German theatre I would have expected these to be early MKs.

Probably. 'Experts' according to one paper, say they could fetch £1million+ each to collectors. Thats unless the Gov decide to decomission another 20 front line aircraft and replace them with Spitfires...
