Hi guys,

ABC (public broadcaster) Radio here in Melbourne Australia just ran a segment on 3D printing.

Thought I might share it with you guys as they discussed after market parts for scale models.

Apparently this whole machine was made in one operation - apart from the propeller which was added later - on a 3D printer!

3D printing is certainly an exciting prospect for model makers however, I understand it is also a very, very expensive one. I don't know a lot about it but I would think the idea of being able to have those 'one-off' bits made for your model would be very welcome, I have a small list of bits I'd like made already, if it turns out to be feasible and economical...

Think you will need a 3D draughting package also which does not come cheap, and has a fairly long learning curve. The owner of a local model ship showed me a model of a tank gun made by a salesman of the 3D system, it was well detailed but had a very rough sandy finish, which is very difficult to smooth off. Thanks for the feedback. I'm new to the forum and have asked my share of questions and consistently get quick and detailed responses. It's nice to give something back.

Interesting to note that the printer that was used in the radio interview could be purchased for less than AUD$1000. As technology progresses (at a frightening rate) the price will only come down. There are templates that can be downloaded from the net already. The gun template has been in the news at the moment. Shame it is used for these purposes.

One day we will have these printers (quite possibly in our life time) that will produce what we choose to wear. Artificial organs may also occur in the not to distant future.

Hiya Justin

I have just joined this forum and I am very wary of the rules !!! However, let me say that I have considerable experience with 3D Design and printing for models, I have a 1:6 scale Huey UH-1D with all the extras that I am building and have invested a lot of time & effort in 3D printed parts including the Cockpit, rear Cabin Seating and fittings, Weapons sytem for Port & Starboard sides etc. and the list goes on and on ...

But I also design and get printed for others any model parts wanted for Helis, Planes, Boats, Hovercraft and Trains - it not as expensive as you think, but anything below 1:8 scale will be limited on detail - it is perfect for 1:6.

When I know what I can and can't say I will enlighten you all more with details of websites to check out., Google me to find out more
