Always. I use 0.5mm brass rod instead of the stupid wire. I make the rod in to a 1/35 track pin by hammering the end.

Some beautiful looking bits of metal there, should make into a lovely model.
 
Looking good so far, there's some nice aftermarket detail going on there.
