I thought I had posted these but I appear to have missed a few from the first quarter of 2018

A couple of 1/10 busts from Sarnia Miniatures that I did earlier this year. Sculpted by our own Peter Gillson with original box art by Peter Day

English Civil War Pike Soldier

Really nice easy paint job on this one but a lovely bust to have in my ECW mini series. This is the 1/10 scale bust of an English Civil War Pikeman foot soldier from Sarnia Miniatures. He could represent either side as there was little to distinguish between them. Flesh in oils, metallic using Darkstar steel buffed with a buffing powder, basically a fine graphite powder. Everything else using Castle artist acrylic.

ECW - Officer of the King's Lifeguard of Foot - 1643

Didn’t get off to a great start and had to be stripped and re started. Flesh using W&N Artisan water soluble oils, the rest using Castle artist acrylics apart from metallic which is Darkstar Steel. Ignore the gap in the pedestal, I don’t have a plinth for it yet so this is borrowed off another bust.

Really like these Sarnia busts. Not sure I have done this one justice but it is all part of the learning curve.

Really good to see your take on these Graham, and a marvellous colourful job you've made of them. Excellent.

Thanks Peter. I have all the Sarnia busts to date. Nearly finished the female fast jet pilot and the Dwarf is in the wings awaiting primer. Of course, I shamelessly copied your schemes :rolling:

Hi Graham

Both very nicely done. I particularly like the leather belt of the pikeman.

I heard of the water soluble ouls but yet to try them, I cannot help thinking the concept of water soluble oils as being a bit of a contridiction - or am I being a bit of a luddit thinking that? It is an interesting idea, presumably they dry quicker than ordinary oils? At some point I must check out my local art shop to see if they have some.

Thanks Peter. No, the water Soluable do not dry faster than traditional oils, sadly..... I see the only real advantage being that you can wash out your brushes in water rather than more toxic thinners. I really do not know if this is a big enough advantage to re invest in new paints. I am currently trying Abteilung oils which are nice paints and are traditional oils. Not sure which I will end up with.
