Gas detector paint blotches are, indeed, usually where the can be seen from the inside, so you would expect it to be placed in front of the windows, as you've done, rather than whatever that is in the photo

And so far, your shading and weathering is very much the right side of subtle. It's not like a vehicle like this would get that dirty, other than falling ashes and mud ftom burst water mains!
