Hi all,

I'm planning to use Alclad for my Mig-15 project, my question is after i paint chrome/stainless do I have to gloss coat it? I'm afraid I will lose the shine if I gloss coat it.

Thanks

You don't have to gloss coat it, but the Alclad finishes are not the toughest.

I have applied a gloss varnish over Alclad finishes of all types in the past. There is a slight change to the finish, but it is minimal.

Here are two pictures of a polished aluminium finish. The first is after the Alclad has been applied (over a gloss black undercoat).

The second is floowing a clear coat, masking  and  spraying of the de0icing 'rubbers' and fabric surfaces.

These are not great pictures, but even to the naked eye the difference is minimal.

Over the more normal, that is not polished or chrome type finishes, the difference is really not visible at all. I don't have a before and after, but here's the underside of an almost completed Ta 152 (why the picture was taken in the front room rather than my den I don't know !)

Steve said all there is to say above.  Alclad suggest their own gloss varnish which is acrylic.  This is an excellent gloss varnish but I cannot see it has anything that makes it better for use over their metal finishes though.

Thanks Steve and Graham, I just bought their Klear Kote. I might try it first on scrap plastics.
