Allen's 1/35 Tamiya 6x6, 2 1/2 Tonner

The big question is, does the Tamiya XF-62 OD look a bit too green? The bottle is 25-30 years old, but stirred up perfectly with no lumps or bumps in it. Or is OD a little bit browner, like the Tamiya plastic color?...Just wondering...
That’s always the question with colours like OD, dark yellow, etc. :) Zaloga once wrote a whole article about the real OD and various model paint colours for it in Military Modelling, and his conclusion was that Tamiya XF-62 came closest. However, that was about 25 years ago, and Tamiya changed the paint since — and if I’m not mistaken, then changed it again because of complaints that the new version was clearly too green. Couple this to the usual problems of saying anything actually useful about colours in photographs, especially ones viewed on computer screens, and basically, the bottom line is: What do you think of it? If it looks OK to you, leave it; if you think it’s not brown enough, try again but mix a little XF-52 or something into the XF-62?

Sorry Allen, late to this party- even though it started on time I'm relieved to see it hit the pause button straight away, so I don't feel so bad. :tongue-out3:
Looking good bro, good to see the mojo so high .

Another note Allen, they tried wooden beds for a while & it looks like you got one. Most were steel. May influence your finishes.

Late afternoon Folks,

Allen. Been there done that lol. The paint looks good.
Thanks Bro! It's been too hot to really do anything else lately, including hairy stick. Wearing the Optivisor is also very limited in the heat...

Hey Bro, look'in good, but I think maybe you have too many sticks if no winch. Trans., e-brake, transfer case, & winch engagement.
A side note. Prime movers (2.5ton GMC short wheelbase) were equipped w/2 spares for additional front axle off road traction. All jimmydeucenahafs had extended front hubs to accommodate this feature but had only one spare mounted.

Thanks for the info, Paul. I just followed Tamiya-San's instructions with the levers and left off the one for the winch, part C5.

Can't say why there is a double lever for part C14 either. I'm not too up on the deuce. As far as the wood bed, I think I will scratch it up with weathering and fill it with CITB. Maybe weather up the side rails a little too. Add some dust and you won't see the wood in the bed...

Thank you Jakko! If the XF-62 was good enough for Cookie back then, it's good enough for me, as my bottle is at least 25 years old anyway! I guess it was all the years working with German RAL colors that threw me off. I think some weathering will do the trick...

Thanks Neil! I'm trying to get back on track, as the Mojo is flying high. Prob is, our weather decided to get Summer like and the temps shot up to 30° C+. Living under the roof is a beatch, my friend...

Wet stuff looks good Allen.
Thank you Lee! Please send me some cool air so I can keep on 'Truckin' Buddy!!!

Today, it was cooler and I had hoped to shoot more paint and get things done. I had all the windows open to chill down the apartment, but every time I wanted to do something, it started to pour down rain. Close the windows, wait, try again, NOT, wait, open them up, prep, poured rain again, close them, repeat as aforementioned................Fergit it........maybe tomorrow.

I did manage to get one thing done today. I test fitted a middle shelf in one of my display cases to see how it would work out,

IMG_4781.JPG
It's not too bad, but needs some adjustments. The 2mm thick shelf needs to be 0.5cm wider and the support screws need to be moved further inwards on the sides. I have 10cm height under, and 9cm on top. Light weight models on top and heavier ones on the bottom will definitely work. The Panther has Friul tracks on it and the shelf would never be able to hold it...

Thanks for looking in and sorry for the late replies. More to come, weather depending!!!...

Maybe not like more modern transfer cases where one lever for neutral (rear drive only), all wheel drive low & high ranges.

Hey Folks,

Maybe not like more modern transfer cases where one lever for neutral (rear drive only), all wheel drive low & high ranges.
Sorry Bro, but you know more about the vehicle, as you've built about 100 of 'em in the past. A Japanese mystery for sure...

I would but when I try to harness it it’s already get Hot.
Thanks for trying Lee!!! The temps have jumped up here again. Ya can't win. Hope all is ok in your neck of the woods my friend...

1 GB down and 1 to go!!! Over the past week and while it was still kinda cool, I drove on with the Deuce to try and get her done too. I painted up lots of stuff with the hairy stick. I started with the motor,

IMG_4849.JPG
I just followed the destructions. One thing was odd. They don't say/show what color the motor itself should be. I went with Satin Black. Not being able to decide how to paint the tires and wheels. (2 brain cells - hairy stick, 2 brain cells - hissy stick), I finally just pulled out a wide flat brush and went at it. Wheels first and then the tires,

IMG_4850.JPG
And like in another thread on here, brushing the Tamiya color XF-62 came out a bit different color and shiny as opposed to when you spray it. I stirred the daylights out of it before hand too. No probs, as piggies and mud will cover that up nicely. I dotted the 6 cargo bed reflectors with red, using a toothpick,

IMG_4852.JPG
IMG_4853.JPG
They'll get dulled up with weathering. I moved on to the exhaust, wind shield and seats,

IMG_4851.JPG
Yes, the clear pieces are in the frame. I lightly dribbled TET in the corners to secure it. Luckily, it didn't run outside the frame ridges. Coated both the seats and exhaust system with the appropriate washes. Then it was time to give the dash it's 4 decals and dot the dials/lever knobs with Satin Black,

IMG_4854.JPG
I also slobbered a coat of AV European Dust wash around the inside of the cab. I painted the inside of the headlights with matt alu and added the clear parts. Then on with the slat grill piece,

IMG_4855.JPGI will paint the pieces on the firewall in the morn. With most of the sub-assemblies done, I started to muck up the fender wells with mud. My big jar of AV Euro Mud was dried out, so I spent a half hour mixing it back to life with water, in the jar. I fell back on my little trusty jar of Reality In Scale mud,

IMG_4858.JPG
It looks like it has a little sheen to it. Some piggies will matt it down for sure. In the morn, I hope to get the wheels and tires mucked up and dig out my collection of CITB to add to what came with the kit. I just hope the temps don't get any hotter than today. It's been over 30° C outside...

Thank you for your patience with this GB build progress. I do want to get it finished, as 2 other projects are screaming at me to be worked on. More to come and have a good week...

Allen, in need of a cold one!!!

Sorry Allen, missed the start. Such an iconic vehicle - really says D-Day. Lovely kit. As you say typical Tamiya. It's coming on a treat.

That's lookin great from here, Allen. I love the dead flat spray on the body, awesome. Ruck On!

Wandering in late as usual and a quick catch up with the build, lovely work so far Allen

Evening from a bit cooler Bamberg everyone,

Coming on very nicely indeed Herr Derwire. A lovely neat build and smooth paint.
Thank you Herr Scott!!! Damn Buddy, I didn't think we were so formal of late!!!...

No need to apologize my friend. The kit is a joy to build Jim, Jigs, or Jimbo (choose one). I guess it is funny to see me build something from the other side. Thanks so much for looking in!!!...

Thank you Steve!!! I have to admit that Tamiya colors spray really well for me. This paint is well over 25 year old and still very useable. Hell, I almost forgot I even had the XF-62 color!!! It's the other brands of acrylics that give me headaches using the hissy stick...

Well Mick, no worries and I can understand that as you are probably still in the holiday modus, even though you are back at work. Thanks for checking in, my good friend...

Lovely jubbly!
Thank you too, Andy!!! You're not doing too shabby either, Brother!!! I can't even keep up with you though...

I knew you would have the answer, Paul and it's most appreciated. The decal on the dash is unreadable and gave no clue being so tiny. Hope all is well in downtown Ohio, Sir!!!...

We're gonna make this short and sweet, as yesterday was way too hot to do anything. Today, I mixed up a batch of piggies with some water and scrubbed it over the tires,

IMG_4859.JPG
I figured I would do the tread/sidewall muck first. I let it dry and then hit them with some dry Q-Tips. You can see the difference after the scrub down,

IMG_4861.JPG
Terrible pic bit the two on the left were scrubbed and the one on the right was not. Now I have to do the wheels with some thicker mud deposits to finish the whole noise. I went looking for some CITB in the stash, but I have so many boxes of :poop:, I couldn't find any of it. I'll do another search tomorrow and maybe I'll get lucky. I guess it's time to do some serious organizing...

Thanks again all, for looking in and the wonderful comments. It keeps the Mojo flowing and me on my toes...Have a great weekend and I'll be back, for the attack..........

Tremendous stuff great subject, ,im with you on the paint brush probs ,my pet hate is tyres being slobby to start with there's no way I'm going through setting up to spray a few ,wether truck or on tank wheels even more so when working in 72nd doesn't matter who's (manufacturers)shade of grey shaken ,stirred with a badger mixer ,put in the lacquer shaker brushed on always got a horrendous sheen so seeing its not just me you've re.ived my pain some what ,keep this one coming im enjoying the journey. Dave

Looking good from the back row of seats behind the rabble Mr D..keep it coming
