The tanks are on a IIc which wasn't introduced until the following year and didn't serve in the period we (the allied side) refer to as the BoB. Infact,except as a nightfighter it didn't really serve as an air superiority fighter on the channel front as it was outclassed by newer german types.

The SpitfireII squeezed into the BoB but apart from a couple of little bulges it looks and was armed exactly like the SpitfireI. It had a newer,more powerful 1775hp Merlin.

Someone already said that the Bf109 E was the principal Luftwaffe opposition.The E-7 missed the BoB (though some were delivered technically just in time. JG26 for example got some in October '40) so no drop tanks.There is evidence for the experimental use of drop tanks but no evidence that they were used operationally during this period which may well be just as well for us. A big problem extending the range of all these early WWII fighters was that they ran out of oil! They needed bigger or auxiliary oil tanks but that's another story.

All the above only applies if we are sticking to what the British define as the BoB. The Germans consider it, the "Luftschlacht um England", as a phase in a longer campaign and fail to see why we get so worked up about it!!!!

I've posted this for info only.The main thing surely is still to build a nice little model,have fun and not worry too much about the history.

What a minefield we walk through when doing this history stuff!

Is it safe to assume the kit is actually of a Mk 1 and they've added the tanks in error I wonder? I'll have a browse and see if I can find a review which will tell me which one it is.

And here was me thinking "A nice simple BoB build. Just what the doctor ordered after some of my recent trials and tribulations." lol

OK guys.

I've not spent an age on this but apparently this kit has parts for both a Mk I and a Mk IIb - hence the tanks in the picture. No-one has commented adversely on the accuracy of the kit so I'm just gonna go ahead and build it according to the instructions for the Mk I. I might try and add a few details in the cockpit as this kit is typical of the time and has very little. Mind you, I have problems enough trying to do detail stuff in 1/32 let alone this microscopic 1/72; so that may not happen!

The tanks are on the box art of the Revell IIC,cannon armed. I notice that it is a tropicalised version. The Merlins fitted to tropical Spitfires did have a larger oil tank enabling longer flights,particularly ferrying up to the Mediterranean theatre from Takoradi in West Africa. I don't know if this was true of the Hurricane, I honestly don't know that much about the type despite always having had a bit of a soft spot for it. I'll try to look it up.

I hasten to reiterate that I'm not trying to make any rules or regulations,just giving a little historical context.

On a lighter note when the Luftwaffe introduced drop tanks on the Bf109E-7 they potentially almost doubled its duration from 1.5 hrs to 3 hrs. This proved very unpopular with the pilots which gives an idea of just how uncomfortable these things really were. For example to fly a Bf109E in a straight line at any speed requires a constant rudder input,there is no rudder trim.Imagine doing that for 3 hrs.

Main airframe difference came with the MkIIC which was extended to take a larger engine. This only affected forward of the main firewall, behind it there was no real change. Oooo don't I sound intelligent. Now someone will tell me I am wrong. But I believe that a MkII B without added extras would look very similar to a Mk I.
 
I think you are correct Graham. The IIB had an uprated Merlin but did they extend the nose or shoehorn it in like on the SpitfireII? Something else to look up. It also carried two extra machine guns outboard on each wing giving a total of twelve .303 Brownings.

Oh God, how I have lived for this day!!!!!!!!!

I have read somewhere that the MkIIC was extended, the B would have been shoehorned I guess
 
All the MkIIs had a different front end I'm afraid. The B and C refer to the wing. The nose is essentially the same,it's more the forward fuselage and how it joins the wing which is different.I've got some plans somewhere which I'll post if I stumble across them.

For the BoB I'd just stick to a MkI !!!

Well fruitful hunting today, found an Airfix ,Aircraft of the Aces 1/72 Bob Stanford-Tuck Hurricane MkI still wrapped in the celophane. It was just sat in a pile of boxes at the Kit Krazy stall at Duxford. So count me in for this one when it starts........................

My Spit didn't come looks like they ran out of stock, I will have to order another but looks like it's going to be Airfix

Yea.... it makes no odds to me (but you will have to do the full diorama with the three Spitfires taking off in the background lol)

Hey, that's only fair John, after all you've got an extra 0/04 to play with!

I'm still waiting for my cheap and cheerful Airfix re-release spit. Really looking forward to getting it, I feel like a kid with pocket money to spend again. :)

I will struggle with one at that size, and the figures are tiny but I will give it a go

That's 'cos half the modelling world have bought up the stock of Spits, Hurris and 109s to have a go at this non-GB GB! lol
