Malaysia Airlines is dismissing 6,500 workers and halting service on 96 domestic routes.
This move comes a month after airline managers said they planned to cut costs by 20 percent.
The airline carrier will be left with only 19 domestic routes after the 96 it is giving up are taken over by its main rival, budget airline Air Asia.
Furthermore, the government, which owns 69 percent of Malaysia Airlines, is ending all subsidies to the company.
