Colonel Dan Dare Pilot of the Future - a British Icon from the 1950s
This hero is often overlooked if not forgotten but was a role model for many children growing up in the 50`s and 60`s
He certainly made me aware of Space Travel and exploration which I avidly keep up to this day
So. due to a lack of Dan Dare figures or busts, I decided to create one my self using very simple materials such as green felt,2 pieces of wood a flat oval wooden base - head printed off from my computer and pasted onto thick card red and golden 4mm tape and 2 drawing pins plus gold cord for the cap braid and a simple pipe carved from wood and painted
I have given him a DFC ribbon as opposed to the Saturn ribbon he would wear ( my salute to the RAF in the 50`s )
This then is my humble tribute to a great and iconic space hero from the past

AAAh, The Eagle, Hotspur, Valiant and Victor, full of all the Empire Heroes - The Wolf of Kabul, Alf Tupper, Captain Hurricane, Matt Braddock - all right wing racist imperialists, now, of course, the stuff I was brought up on! ( Graduating to WE Johns & GA Henty )

Nice work Colin and memories brought back for me too.
I still have in my possession two original Eagle comics, an original Eagle hardback annual and best of all an original Dan Dare stopwatch complete with a turning spaceship second hand!

I'll try and post some pictures - if I can remember just where the items are stored...... :upside:

Thanks for sharing.

My proudest Dan Dare Possession is the Dan Dare Radio Station boxed an in full working order
I have also bought all the Eagle Annual and Comics in reproduction book form not to mention the complete annuals and comics on CD that I am working my way through
I dont think Frank Hampson realised what an icon he created that has endured for nearly 70 years

My favourite comic back in the 50 was the Eagle. The artwork of the eagle on the cover is an icon in its own right. When I was a kid Mum and Dad bought my brother and me a check jacket each with the Dan Dare Space Fleet's logo on them! Dan Dare, Tommy Walls, Luck of the Legion and those great cutaway drawings in the centrefold........Happy Days. A few years ago someone ran an advertisement on the television using the Dan Dare characters Dan, Digby and Professor Peabody. I recognised them straight away, but I guess they were lost on most of the viewing audience at the time.
