Can anyone tell me when and why the RAF changed the colour scheme on its spitfires from green and brown to green and grey?

The brown and green camouflage saw the RAF through the Battle of Britain and into1941. With them now taking the fight to the enemy, and having to cross the Channel or North Sea to do it, the brown part of the camouflage stood out against the sea. So it was changed to dark grey, a scheme of grey and green being equally good over land or sea.

As Dave says, the change reflects the changing role of RAF fighter aircraft at this time. Our bombers, operating at night, kept the Dark Earth/Dark Green upper surfaces as this gave better camouflage on the ground. A notable exception would be Mosquitoes which were given the Ocean Grey/ Dark Green over Medium Sea Grey day fighter scheme.
