discussion Computer glitch

I've just upgraded from IE8 to IE9 as i was having problems with certain pages. But now i'm having issues with ths too. Some button on webpages work and some don't. Like on ths forum i can't add picture or links using the icon buttons. At the bottom it comes up saying javascript:void. Now i am runing the latest java and i'm also using PC Health Advisor. Anyone got any ideas as to what i can do as it's driving me and the wife mad?

Frankly, from a users point of view IE stinks, get yourself Firefox instead, or Chrome is supposed to be good

That's not an option unfortunetly. It's the wife's laptop and she needs windows and IE on here

Chrome is probably the best bet at the moment. It runs using the firefox engine (kinda) but it's blisteringly fast against IE. I wouldn't go back now. IT does take a couple of hours to get used to it, but worth it.

Hi Allyne

I would go with the suggestion of using Firefox. You can run both on your laptop and they won't interfere with each other, just download it here. Once downloaded run it and then drag the icon to the bottom task bar. The only other alternative is to do a recovery to a earlier date prior to the upgrade IE 9. Hope this helps.

Hi All,

The only thing wrong with any PC is Windows! Yes I run a PC but use Linux, it's FREE, it don't nag you every five minutes to say it wants updating, your anti-virus is out of date, etc, etc... There is plenty of FREE software to do most things, like Open Office, image editors, Firefox and Thunderbird for internet, etc.

It will update when you tell it to, you don't have to keep restarting it either (after an update or an install). Like the MAC system it built on a proper system Unix

Hi Al. I'm certainly no computer expert and I too use Windows and IE (Heresy apparently!). Whenever I've had problems I've always found that updating followed by a disc clean has sorted them in the past. I would try updating Java and see how it goes. Failing that, you could recover to a date before you changed from IE 8 as suggested.

Well after a few temper tantrums and much pulling off what little hair i have left i think i have sorted it out (touch wood). I updated my divx program and low and behold everything is working. Cannot for the life of me fathom out why but i don't care. I'm now back and able to geek it

As they say, if you're happy with what you've got, stick with it. There's nothing "wrong" with IE, if you like it that's fine

Likewise Linux, I've dabbled with it myself in the past, it's very smooth and best of all free but it does take some tweakery which isn't an option for some

Windows is okay, just don't believe the hype, either from Microsoft or all of it's denigrators

And just to make things more fun; You can install Chrome, which is very good, I use it all the time, AND still have IE installed and your misses can use that.

We have both in the wifes machine and both work with out problems. I just find chrome to be faster and more reliable!

I would say go for it Allyne. Chrome, being a part of the Google empire, Has a nice little trick. you can just highlight a word in the text you are reading and a quick right click gives you the option of searching direct in Google, with out having to open a Google window, it does that for you. The ability of having several pages open at once is also great, no waiting for a window to load just click on the tab at the top and its there. Great for comparing things! Ties in nicely with Google translate too. If the page is in a language other than the one the browser is set to you get asked if you would like it translated. Which it does quite well. You can tell it to remember so the next time you come to a web site in the same language it will translate it with out asking.

OK I will shut up now and just say give it a try, I did and have not looked back since!!!

+1 for Chrome here too and I've been on Firefox and IE for long periods prior to my conversion and haven't really looked back either...

Mmmmm! I installed google chrome but have since removed it. It ate up system resources,specifically physical memory.Usage went up into the 95% region and eventually stalled my computer. Following advice from a more IT savvy friend I deleted all the browser data which both freed up a huge chunk of space on my hard drive (is the chrome cache unlimited?) and seemed to cure the problem. I got cold feet and uninstalled the thing anyway.

I'm not a computer expert and don't know if this was just me,I'm just reporting a personal experience.

It seems i was too quick in thinking i had got rid of the problem. The icons now all work and i can indeed surf the web once again (sometimes) but the pc seems to lock up/lag at times and in some cases quite badly. when i use ctrl, alt, del to bring up the start task manager it can take up to 90 secs for it to appear. Something isn't right

Have a look in "task manager" and see what process(es) are using the most memory. Google them and find out what they are and if they need to be running.

For example when I use my o2 dongle a process called tscui.exe runs and throttles my lap top. I stop it and everything,including my mobile connection,works fine.

Allyne,when you open the task manager at a time when your machine is chugging along have a look at the values shown at the bottom,Processes,CPU usage and commit charge. I'll bet that the commit charge is very high percentage of the total. You would hope it would be around 25%,I've just checked on this very old lap top I'm using and the figures are 615M/2440M as an example. I suspect that something is running on your machine and monopolising this memory slowing everything else down.
