The old turn it off and turn it back on again!........Actually a good thing to try.

Cheers

if all else fails pop the battery off and reattach, plug into mains then start as per usual.

worse case scenario it could be a hardware problem ...ie harddrive fubar.

pity you'r so far away.. I used to fix em for a living.

Battery out, power suply removed. On/off button held down 30 seconds to release any residiual power.

Plug in press button. It worked once, when I came home from work. Then took to acid test and shut the top down while I made and ate dinner. Opened it after an hour......blank screen again.

Went through the procedure again and.....nowt. fan runs and that's about it.

Why does it always happen before a back-up run?!

Ian M

ok then if it worked once then hardware is assumed serviceable. the fact that it smegged up again when the lid was shut leads me to the assumption that there's a glitch in windows power settings. maybe get it up and running again and instead of closing the lid to make it hibernate or sleep .. just switch it off. if it starts up again with no problems then its the power settings and you'll have to either reinstall or ignore the sleepy function.

Thanks Colin I will try that if I can get I started.

At least I will be able to back up all the photos and documents before I get even more problems.

I have an external hard drive permanently connected, and a software that automatically makes a backup of the internal drive every morning at 8 am. In my case the backup is a clone of the hard drive and the computer can be started up on that drive, so getting me exactly back to where I was at 8 am. That's on a mac. Perhaps Windows has similar. (If you have a laptop, you would need to connect the external drive every time when going to bed.)

Thanks for that !

I was looking at a nice little NAS/Backup server thing just last week. Wireless to...

Full back-up software. Just the job I thought I'll get one of them pay day. Two days later....

I normally do a manual back up once a week but its a pain in the bum ...

I guess I will just have to bite the bit and back up the hard way... Take the drive out and borrow a pc to copy all the important bits.

get a 32gb media card and just have a batch file to double click on to run a backup.

the files are written in notepad.. given a .exe extention and can be found on the internet on forums. if you can't find one I can write one and you can change the drive letters to suit.

theres a web site called `mydigitallife`the most helpful site on the web with all your problems solved

Well I pulled the hard disc and dug the multi adapter. I now have 30Gb of must save files. So if all else fails I can format the disk and 'just'

Reinstall every thing else.....:-/

All I have to do is get the damd thing to start.
