Hi everyone,

Just a quick question I need to throw out there before I buy everything I want for my first models and diorama. If I bought buildings and troops in 1:72 scale and a tank in 1:76 scale, would the proportions and scale of the tank be completely wrong? I researched this a little just now and apparently some items which are labelled 1:76 are actually 1:72, but labelled differently due to certain worldwide sizing issues? As such, a 1:76 tank would be fine?

I'd like a bit of advice before I buy anything which isn't going to fit despite being slightly embarrassed at asking a question which most likely has a very obvious answer!

Hi Jamie,it's not a silly question at all! The difference is actually very small. To give you an idea a 2m length in 1/76 would be 26.3mm and in 1/72 27.7mm a difference of only 1.4mm.

I think you'd be hard pushed to see this difference in a diorama containing figures and armour. I have seen dioramas containing 1/32 aircraft and 1/35 armour (the difference is slightly bigger) and they look fine.

Cheers

There would be a difference and I am sure some purists, or 'rivet counters' as we call them would throw their arms in the air and wail until the end of the world. However, the difference would be small and if a figure is stood at the side of a tank, how do we know how tall that figure is? Could be short, could be tall so worry not about the numbers at this scale and create a visual feast of a slice of history. I know that your diorama has a serious intent but for the modelling side of it, you will get better results having fun and enjoying the pleasure of modelling than dusting off the slide rule to calculate any differentials.

If you put the 1:72 stuff at the back of the display, then it'll be further away and look about right with the 1:76 at the front

"The ones in here are very small, the ones out there... are far away..."
