place a bit of toilet tissue over the flash,it tones the flash down but keeps it bright enough to see the subject(i meant diffuses)not so concentrated in one place

Thats what i would have done Ole, in fact when i had my digital Nikon and Canon (before i sold up) i had all the relevant filters needed (and some i never used
)
I'm just a simple chap now and only use the digi camera on my Samsung mobile ... the lens and flash LED are that close i can't get any filter object over the flash as it shows in the viewfinder.
