discussion Cracked Conrete Road ?????

Hi All,


I'm looking to have a cracked concrete road for a dio........... Maybe with a few small potholes and patched up areas ...... But I have no idea where to start ???? .......... I thought about Tarmac. They stuff they sell for train layouts. But it looks too pristine and "black" .......any help or ideas would be appreciated.

You could use normal household filler for the road. or wetndry paper is also good you can paint both to the sort of shade you want.

This is my side wall on the SW docking bay 94 dio I am doing, it is polystyrene with a coating of modellers fine powder mixed with PVA and applied with a lollipop stick, if you dry it quickly-I stuck it in front of my halogen heater and it steamed, you get this cracked effect.

Have you thought about thin cork Peter ? It has a texture to it and cracks easy

I like the finish on that Si ....... Perhaps I 'll give that a try. I suppose a hairdryer on hot will have a the same effect ......?????


Alan, I have an old cork noticeboard kicking around at work ...I'll rip that apart and experiment a bit.

How about fine grade sandpaper rather than wet and dry? At least it's a pale brown colour rather than dark grey so should liik more like concrete.

or you can always pore a thing layer of plaster in the top of an ice cream lid,let dry,and you can bet your life if


you try not to brake it it will brake,then set that down were you wont on top of a PVA,glue bed and just dont push right down leave uneven,


as well i do like Si,cracked effect.

I do like that idea Monica ........I think I'll give that a try...

I'm a plaster guy too - mix with a bit of joint compound, this will slow drying time a bit and give you some time to work with it - put near heat source - when dry should have cracked nicely

Thanks Jim......... I'm going to give the plaster a go......... If I get it right I'll post the results up on here.

Well it's sitting in the oven right now cooking away a treat ............... Can't see any cracks yet . But I put some gauze bandage in the tray I used for a backing, so with a bit of luck I can crack it when it cools and it'll stay in one piece for gluing to the base...... fingers crossed......

One very nice "Cracked Concrete" Road Surface ........... I'm proper pleased with that.......... and the gauze on the back is holding it all together. When it cools down I'll stick it on the base.

A bit more cracked than I'd intended ............. But sometimes in life we just have to take what we are given Si ........... I've stuck it down to the base on a "bed of PVA" (as Monica put it) ...... tomorrow when it's hardened off properly I'll seal it with some thinned down PVA .......... Job done !

I used "plaster repair" from B&Q .......... and quite unintentionally the surface has turned out a bit rough which is good for a concrete effect...... The plaster repair stuff is a bit more gritty than filler or plaster of paris.

Thanks Ian ............. I just have to get the couring right. I've been looking at some concreted areas here at work ....... and they are a great mixture of colour...... when most people thing of concrete they think it's grey, and I guess when it's new it pretty much is....... But there are other colours involved as well ....... particularly when it's dirty. Particularly in the cracks and potholes........


I think I'll start with white primer, then mist it in grey ........ and a brown wash....... and see where I go from there. Unless anyone has a better plan????
