Cheesed off with the compressor noise. Looked at the very quiet refrigerator type compressor. But these cost the earth are large and to Jersey £95 freight.


Decided to build a acoustic housing.


Tested and the noise reduction is dramatic. I would say about two thirds reduction plus the noise is muffled and not that battering ram in the ears character.


Ran the compressor for 5 minutes full out and it was a cool as a cucumber no different than running out of the enclosure.


I have an inline gauge at worktop level so there is no need to access the gauge on the compressor.


Cost about £35. The tiles were about £20.

Nice job. I like the roof truss plates, so much neater than those block one that are screwed together. Where did you get them (I searched)? (But the problem with building supplies is that items are usually sold in large quantities.)


I wonder why you get sufficient noise to be a problem. My compressor is the popular single pump with reservoir type and it does not bother me. This is partly because it is quite quiet when running (its in a bedroom). My spraying sessions typically consist of about 10 sprays each lasting about 7 seconds, 20 PSI, then I clean the AB and switch off. After running up to pressure the compressor hardly ever starts again before I have finished. It sits on a low table.

Nice job Laurie of Arabia... Good idea actually and although it cost a few quid it shows you what you can do to deaden noise and vibration levels.

Very neat Laurie, and a good noise reduction fix....


Luckily, the only noise I have to contend with is the clang when my paint brush hits the side of the cleaning jar!

I'm lucky enough to have one of those fridge compressor jobs. Fortunately it only cost me the princely sum of a case of beers. It was being thrown out at work due to a leaky seal. A quick service and it was fine.


The 'roof truss plates' Mr. Kir, can also just be you need to look at MDF sheet. Most DIY stores sell it an many cut it to size for a fee.

Equally Steve I do not know why yours is not a problem. It has twin compressor cylinders but according to the specs. there is little difference between twin and single. what I can say is that my new contraption gives a remote murmur compared to standing next to the tympani at the Albert hall.


Truss plates I would bet that , as Ian has said, any builders merchant. Not B & Q a similar item there but with an enhanced finish and matching cost. Mine were less than a £1 each.

Partly right Si. There are basically 2 types of sound. Airbourne and Impact (how do I know that : 50 years in architecture perhaps ?).


I had the compressor on a ply base ( to stabilize) under which I had and still have a piece of washing machine base rubber and under that 4" of foam which dealt with the impact or vibration noise. Also the floor of our flat has a noise insulation layer which is to stop our noise reaching our neighbours below this also has a dampening effect on impact noise. The problem then was the airborne noise. Surrounding it with acoustic tiles has dampened that considerably.


A refrigerator type very quiet compressor is about £260 plus carriage £95. Plus it weighs 45lbs plus it takes up about 3 times the room of a Chinese type compressor. On that basis £35 for my little enclosure makes sense to my bank balance. Also enjoyed knocking it up.
