discussion Do you have to like what you are making?

My sister gave me a model about 4 weeks ago which was kind of her.

Thing is its a Russian KV1 1/48 by Hobby boss (Got it from the tank museum, sister lives just down the road)

For some reason I cant drum up any interest for it, for me so far its as interesting "Researching" the model as making it, I spent hours looking at the SAS jeeps and various websites about the SAS and LRDG

perhaps its because I read about them as a kid.

So the question is how do you pick the next model? and why

I don't think you have to like it although obviously the more that a person likes a particular tank, plane or ship, then they're going to enjoy building it more. Or sometimes it might be something with a historical significance. I sometimes look for one's that would help me get better-I'm kinda drawn to Russian WW2 armour atm coz of of the 'rough' finish of their tanks-lot's of weathering possibilities there! But I'll be glad to just finish my King Tiger-hard-ended 3 tone camo is a pain to get right!

I think the KV1 is actually a cool-looking tank with lots of interesting features to highlight. I'll make it for you!

i like the russian t 34 tank because it was supposedly the best tank in ww2 and i like the look of it

hi hugh, for me personally i have to have an interest or it has to tickle my fancy otherwise like you i cant do it. Ive passed up many a great bargain at the car boot sale simply because it didnt interest me .(but theres been a few great bargains i DID get eg.--tamiya 1/48 mosquito fb VI complete+unmade but with two propellers painted --50 p !!!!!! bargain of the century!) No matter what it is plane ,tank,car boat etc if it grabs you , build it ! and always remember enjoy it! cheers tony

absolutely patrick, when i asked the woman how much it was i was gobsmacked! i was dying to tell her its about £20 in the shops! but obviously someone had bought it for her kid and he wasnt interested , certainly made my day though!

I've got to be interested in the machine, and the more detail the better (which is why I go for the big stuff). Oh, and it's got to look cool. Coolness is a factor.

I think its vert important to have an interest in the models you build or paint. Lack of interest shows in the quality of the finished product. Its why I am always building F14s and Phantoms

It could work the other way around. Say someone gives you a model outside your normal sphere of interest. You think you might give it a go and then start looking into it,maybe starting with a bit of googling. You may find it all more interesting than you first imagined. I know someone who was really into WWII allied aircraft but after just such a gift became hopelessly hooked on Japanese aircraft. It's still aircraft but I don't think he had ever built anything Japanese previously! Before you know it you've got a bookcase full of obscure Japanese references and a loft full of Zeros.

Hi for me i guess i have to find the kit interesting for me to buy it in the first place, i have just built an italeri 1:35 scale schnellboot, now i normally stick to WWII armour with a particular interest in german half tracks but this kit kept calling to me everytime i went in to the shop so one day i decided to buy it. At £90.00 it wasn't cheap but i think it was well worth the build the pics have been posted if you fancy a look. However i think if it takes your fancy then go for it you might just find gem of a build.

When I pick up a model I sometimes do it on a whim. I just bought the Revell 1:32 Ju 88 but I don't know were I am going to put it when it is done. I usually know what I am going to buy because I research the subject. But the odd time I buy something just because. I usually model WWII aircraft but sometimes a tank or two get in the mix, or a ship, or a car model. I have been model building since 1993 and I can only imagine how much I have spent in 17 years. I have bought models that I thought would be something that I like but end up not finishing due to lack of interest. I am almost complete a Spitfire that I bought a month ago and I am really interested in that model so I want to finish it. It has been a while since I have got a modeling bug like that. With having a healthy interest in the subject you are building you are going to give a little bit extra in your work on your model or whatever you do.
