Hi guys,

i started this project last week. its the tamiya Ducati Desmosedici GP4, however i wanted to build the later GP11 or GP12 to reflect the last bike(s) Valentino Rossi raced in moto gp. Sadly, Tamiya dont make these bikes so the idea is to build the GP4 and then paint it in 2012 livery. Typically, my first attempt at painting the scheme wasnt too successful so ive tried stripping the paint off using 'Oven Brite' oven cleaner in a plastic bag. I left it over night but it didnt really shift the paint. I used a cellulose based (i think) colour and acrylic with limited success. Its not frying away in Mr. Muscle oven cleaner as i write. Do either car windscreen wash, windowlene or bleach have any effect? i want to use something from around the house rather than shell out for a paint remover.

90% of the colour scheme will have to be completed using paint as any decal kits wont fit the GP4 bodywork, although some cheap quality are availably for the minichamps GP11..

Any advice on paint stripping would be great. Anyway, heres a few pics of my progress so far.

The engine has been painted using mostly alclad 2 paints then treated with an enamel based wash, everything is acrylics. ive also included a few detailed pics of my work in progress.

For the rear damper i pinched a PE reservoir that i had no use of-its not 100% accurate but im not too bothered as the bike isnt totally accurate anyway. By the time its decalled it will look fine (anyway, its almost entirely invisible once fitted to the swingarm).

I also had a PE metal rod going spare so ive used this for the front steering damper. With a little bit of encouragement from a pin vice its fits a treat and only requires shortening.

Its far from finished but i thought someone may find it of interest. As always, any suggestions or tips about any of the finishes or assembly procedures is ALWAYS greatly appreciated.

Looking good Si. Glad to see you back at the table- How are things going, well I trust?

I have heard that Brake fluid works as a paint remover, not sure if it works on all types of paint though.

Looking good. What did you end up using for the brake/clutch lines? They look ace!

theyre just cut from green tubing made by a company called hobby dragon. i bought them from media mix hobby in japan. i ordered a whole bunch of stuff from them and everything arrived in about 9 days. by contrast, a UK company that i ordered some of the same parts took over 2 months before i cancelled the order.

i used a lot of PE moto gp details on my previous build (view the pics on the 'Camel Yamaha' thread) but im only using a few PE parts on this one. Im planning to make my next couple of projects very highly detailed so have gradually amassed a load of aftermarket parts. all i need now is the talent to build the models i have mind!

heres a few extra pictures.

i had a nightmare converting the GP4 to the GP12 livery as it is obviously quite different in a few areas. i had to resort to repainting the model again as no decals are available for this conversion and my earlier painting attempt ended in disaster.

unfortately the top coat i used (Humbrol Crystal Clear) reacted with the white paint causing the colours to bleed a little but more annoyingly, the white to discolour in random places. Also, some of the decals wrinkled and lifted. So basically ive had to make do with it as is. it only really looks disappointing very close up. The red however sprayed perfectly flat.

The model could never be 100% accurate so ive attempted to recreate the GP12 as far as was possible with my resources. It looks acceptable compared to the others in my growing collection. Hope you enjoy some of the pics.

that is a great build like the finish - all you need now is the rider oh thats right he's off back to yamaha for a couple more wins!!!!
