Hi, Below I will attach photos from the East Fortune Airshow as I get through editing them. They aren't fantastic and were pretty much all taken with a 70-200mm lens so some will be a bit small, a new super telephoto lens is a long way off for me.

Comments of any nature welcome- I'm a particular fan of reasonable and justified critisism but I am a good couple of years out of practice taking pics and this was also a family day out so I was not free to please myself!

Cheers

Like the bottom red arrows one mate, I think maybe a little tighter cropping in from the right would balance the shot a little more, but great shots nether the less. We have a local show end of August and can't wait to dust the 500mm off, I'll post some pics on here too.

I look forward to that, I was contemplating a new super telephoto but Im going to wait to see if the canon 400 5.6 is re-released with IS, I dont think I need anything better quite yet, will try your suggestion with the cropping too thanks

What format are you saving in? If you save in as large as you can, you will get fewer on your SD card but you can get much greater zoom with whatever editor you use if you have a big image to start with. Disks are cheap so just carry a few with you.

Of course, a great big 500mm lens will work even better...

cheers, I just stick with raw and export to Jpeg in Lightroom, its an old 1Dmk IIN so the files are only about 12Mb! not amazing for cropping, its just under A3 at 300ppi I think so I like to try and keep cropping to a bare minimum.

Hi, I have added lots more pics to the Gallery and have updated the first post to include some. Hope you like.

Also if someone can explain how I add the photos with the black border window slideshow thing using the gallery rather than uploading individual pics on a thread I would appreciate it!

Thanks for posting the photos Dougie. They look fine to me, at Events like Airshows it is very difficult to get good shots.

For aircraft in the air, you are often a long way away and need a long lens, but you have fast moving aircraft so very little time to compose the shots and adjust the focal length if using a zoom lens. For the shots at the Belgium National Day because it was in the city I had around 5 seconds to shoot the F-16s from first sight over the building opposite to vanishing over the trees behind.

For aircraft on the ground it can be almost impossible to get a photograph without a strange gentleman (or part thereof) appearing in the shot. I have a lovely shot of the back of someone's head where they stood up just as I pressed the button.

Yeah that sounds familiar, people wandering about in front of me, I wasn't at the front so I can't complain, I was sitting about in the best sun Scotland has seen in months with my daughter trying to keep her interested but even the Mighty display the Red Arrows put on was not distracting enough for her! (Ice cream, people on stilts and dancing cheerleaders were more exciting)

I would like a 400mm lens, I have hummed and hawed about a new 600mm zoom Tele but I'm not fully convinced. Think I will wait a bit longer and maybe an new canon 400mm 5.6 IS will come out, that coupled with a newer DSLR with better Noise handling might do the trick. I'm not going to buy something like a 500mm prime until the Mortgage is paid off, the wife is good to me but that wouldn't end well!

I Imagine a set of F16's coming at you would require some good reflexes and fast AF lens. There is such a compromise between Quality and portability that all the money in the world will not buy the perfect telephoto zoom lens, they simply cannot be built!
