discussion Ekranoplans...???

Always been fascinated by these machines but the ones in this video are something else and really spectacular to watch.

Interesting argument though which frequency would you use for them..?? 27, 40 or 35Mhz...???

These are aircraft that look like hydroplanes, they are meant to fly. They are not Ekroplanes but similar to the Flying Tank, Indy Car, lawn-mower etc put by FlyingThingz.com so 35mhz and "flying" frequencies only. ( Did you check out the Spitfre video on Micheal Connally`s site? ) www.rcgroups.com has a big number of posts on 6 threads on design of these machines(Foamies section) since Micheal sold the design to a manufacturer and reneged on promise to publish plans. Lots of others going it alone with basic lay-out and eyeballed plans from Dutch guy, Pro-Per. One rip-off merchant then stole this and offered un-official kits on eBay. Hours of reading if you follow all the posts. Everybody wants one but seem to forget that Micheal is an ACE pilot and buyers expecting to duplicate the video may be in for a surprise unless they are good flyers. I fancy a glo powered version out of the foamie "indoor-ish" type. Any experimenters start with Pro-per`s plans and read the fixes . Check the full-size Unlimited Hydro racing scene for colour schemes, Miss Budweisser isnt the only one racing ! Maybe start a Hydro-Flier thread here ?

i have seen a couple of models built from these plans fly/sailing and they are very impressive to watch, running at about 18-24 inches above the water. :music_too

The Taylor machines are Ekronoplans but surely they dont fly that high Adz ? I`d think they would have to be on "surface" frequencies in spite of the fact that they have left the surface slightly. There is a plan from one of the UK mags for a reversed delta with a high T-tail, that does fly well out of the ground effect. Sold as an Ekranoplan it is really just add looking aircraft and flies like one.

the one`s i have seen have flown that high, and no they `re not really meant to sit that high, i think slightly overpowered. on a short run about 5 inches in height.but i think with some practise and tweaking more height can be acheived but not for long periods. and yes i think these should be considered as surface craft.

we had these displaying at our last model boat show, they do draw the crowd in, as they are so different, the bloke was from high wycombe area.... i think he has a link on modelboatmayhem website.....

That would be Ekranoplans not Hydro-Fliers which are aircraft and fly full 3D style aerobatics not surface effect machines. I seem to remember the reversed delta (base first) was called "Firebird" , a name used for a very different kettle of pre-cooked rice today.
