discussion Favourite war films?

Just wondering what everyone's favourite war films are. I have about 2000 dvds in my collection and most of them are from the war film genre. Mainly ww2 films but Also a fair few American civil war films (glory is one of my fav films of all time)

I also have some absolute shockers in my collection too (war pigs.... just why?)

But anyway saving private Ryan has to be up there. I can watch that movie again and again (and I do) enemy at the gates is also fun.

I also have a soft spot for generation war. I think it was on in 3 parts on the BBC a few years ago but I picked it up on DVD. Follows 2 german brothers in the wehrmacht and 3 of their friends (a Jewish german, his girlfriend and their other friend who is a nurse in the field) it follows each of their story's and even though there are some quite big plot holes in part it's a great series. Worth a watch if you don't mind german subtitles.

It changes on a weekly basis though. I like Memphis belle, American sniper, braveheart, lone survivor, downfall, unbroken, fury, black hawk down

Definitely Saving Private Ryan and Platoon, but I also like Inglourious Basterds. The performances (particularly from Christolph Waltz) are superb.

Nice list. Only one on there I don't like and that's apocalypse now (i think I'm the only one who doesn't like it) and can't say I've watched MASH but the rest are all great

Saints and Soldiers.

Around 10yrs. old. Both budget productions. and on ebay right now for under £2 incl. P/P!

All the others mentioned are only playing at it.

Hacksaw Ridge comes a close third....

I enjoyed the original saints and soldiers ( not too much the sequels) I managed to pick it up for 20p at my local cex store

days of glory is that the one About the Algerian/French troops? Think I've watched it but can't remember it very well was a long time ago

As a kid growing up the little guy Audie Murphys films gets my vote. I'd have my little plastic Thompson Machine Gun at the ready when they came on the TV.

But as an adult and yet to be surpassed imho it as to be Private Ryan for me.

'All quiet on the western front' (original) Shows the disillusionment and personal losses of young men drawn at first into war for grandiose and uber patriotic reasons.
Only to find that it is actually a grinding hell of destruction, pain and mortality.
This film also showed the deep and dark lurking in men's souls who when on leave from the front could not relate to civilian life and wanted only to return to the front though they themselves could not understand why.
An enigmatic syndrome I myself wrestled with in my very younger days, mercifully this has waned over these past decades...to this day I cannot understand it.

Though dated and 'campy' by todays supposed standards of cinematic "excellence" It stands to this day as a commentary of the inexplicable man made tragedy of war.

where eagles dare (was talking about it at work only yesterday.....one of the young lads didnt understand 'broadsword calling danny boy' when one of the older guys said it)

blackhawk down (read the book.......x10 better than the film)
longest day (who wasnt in that film?)

does shindlers list count as a war movie? superb film

OOH!.....Another couple of great ones....'From Hell to Eternity' (1950s Tab Hunter) and 'Hell in the Pacific' (1960s Lee Marvin) both are soul searching stories about the absurdity and injustices of war....look them up....very deep story lines indeed

I've only seen the remake. Bought the original but it had a scratched disk so was skipping every few mins
