discussion First ever diorama attempt what supplies do I need to buy?

right I've never attempted a diorama before. But decided to give one a go.

And I'm nearly finished painting this old destroyed church door..

So I'm hoping to use them in some sort of simple diorama. But not sure how to go about building a base for the diorama, what materials do you use for mud/grass etc is it all easily available at model shops? What tools will I need to buy ? I've seen people mention some sort of model putty? Any help would be appreciated thank you
